Given that it is the 1st of January, I've made some resolutions, among them a resolution to be better prepared this year...

One way to work on this is to rework/rebuild my BOB/GHB and take it out for a test-drive...

I'm planning on doing this in April, when the weather warms up a bit, and some discussion in another thread made me think about how cool it would be if a bunch of ZSers all did it "together" in our various parts of the world over the same weekend...

My Thoughts on a Mass & Distributed Mock Bug Out (MBO)

1) go either April 11 (Friday) or April 12 (Saturday) of 2008

2) leave from either work or home (no driving to an optimal spot), and walk

3) the MBO should run for at least 24 hours

4) use only the gear in your BOB or GHB to stay alive, comfy, and happy during your MBO

5) be safe and legal in planning/executing your MBO

6) post beforehand to indicate that you will be participating, and then report back afterwards on what worked, what didn't, what you would add to your BOB/GHB, what you would take out, and what you learned

7) adjust the above suggested guidelines to suit your needs...this is for fun after all...

I would be interested to see how many counties, states, countries we can get involved...

I will be participating in the April MBO in Franklin/Essex County, in New York State, in the USA.

Thanks for starting this post. I will make every effort to participate. Polk County, Missouri, USA. Nothing like sharpening some skills and getting real time usage out of my supplies. See what works and what does not. One miserable night verses a miserable existence.

I'm in for fri 11th and sat 12th April.

South Australia. Australia

I will begin the Bug Out with a 20km/12.5 mile hike. With full set up through the hills. My only restriction is, I will be Bugging Out to my own back yard. (Have to be close to home for the workmen doing the renos.) However I will stick to all Bug Out requirements only eating, sleeping etc with the gear I take. I will finish on sunday with the same 20km/12.5 mile
hike to simulate the work load of Buging out on foot.

This is a great idea nfa, I hope we get a heap of people doing this. Talk about a group learning experience.

This is the sort of thing we should be encouraging on a regular basis. It's one thing to talk about it online, quite another to put it into practice.

NFA, I'm curious about the no driving rule. Not every bugout situation starts on foot from work or home, and for practice reasons, it may be impractical to try to bugout in our immediate neighborhoods. Thoughts?

see guideline #7 above...I would alter the no driving suggestion if you need to, but the intent was to avoid people just driving to a campground without thinking about how they would get to a place to seek shelter from their home/work...

You're already one of the cool kids, Sweet Tea.

And that weekend is (ish) my birthday... Oh well, can't think of a better way to celebrate...

I'll probably try to make that a family camping weekend or something.

I could bug out to my parents' back yard, but after awhile my mom would probably not be able to resist coming out to bring me food, or her new puppy to play with, or tell me how lonely she thinks it must be outside. Last time I bugged out to her back yard, her gi-mongo 25 lb. cat Johnny came and kept me company, though, and it was about 15F and snowing, so that wasn't so bad.

Good idea, nfa :)

I'm in :D . It'll be great if we can get all the valley dwellers to bug out together. It would also be quite a way to meet and greet my fellow AZ. ZSers.
Nothing like a bit of rough'n it to make an accurate first impression.

I'm going to add that to my sig file. That's true of everything we say here. A huge FAK and a BOB so full you can't lift it do no good without skills and practice.

Count me in folks! I will be bugging out with at least one 10 year old for company :D. That should make for a interesting MBO. After this is done should we post pics and discussion back here or start another thread? Just Wondering, Bruise

It occurs to me that disasters can certainly happen while visiting a friend's house, so if people want to do group bug outs, that would certainly work, so long as the other guidelines are still kept in mind once you are at your friend's house...

That being said, if any of you mooks in the region feel like visiting me for a mock disaster, I'd be happy to bug out as a group...

I'll be bugging out in Apex NC.

This should be quite interesting.

I'll make every effort to praticipate, but I will probably have to drive part of the way.

The good news is that there are several great BOL within 15-20 minutes. The bad news is that they're all swampland.

Mosquito netting FTW!

I can already hear the Mrs. "You want to do what!?!?"

I'm in though. My thought is I'll do a circular hike with my BOB and end up back at my place for the night. My place is pretty typical of the surrounding area and I can try out a couple of different skills on my own land.

This is something I've been meaning to do myself for a while now. Thanks for giving me a reason not to put it off any longer.

+1
My other half thinks I'm crazy enough already.
I'll probably end up working that weekend anyway-which I guess would almost duplicate a lot of the tasks I'd have to prepare for if I had to bug out anyway (My BOL is quite a drive away, so a worst case scenario would include a random break-down or two. ) April should be perfect, because I'd be starting to see the most likely "road trip" breakages at work.
So, what I'll probably do is hike both ways to work both days carrying my GHB and EDC tool kit followed by a doing a little more of the general fixey fixey than I usually do while living out of my BOB (eating just what's in it, drinking only the water therein and such.
Any other ideas how to simulate a vehicle bug out?
-A-

You can count me in, for the longest time I've been thinking I need a BOB, but haven't really made any steps toward a serious one until recently, and this event will certainly help me find out if my BOB will be up for the job! Great idea NFA! It always helps having a date set to act as a kick to the ass to get you moving, this will help give me a goal to reach!
