Wildcard: Go with a PTR or CETME/G3 clone!!!

Mags are still like $3-5 a pop, and the delayed roller blowback is a pretty reliable, even if violent, system.

Good ones run around a grand

I'm a bit biased towards the FAL. I'd go with the FAL, but it's more of an emotional decision.
The Arsenal is a fine firearm and the platform is more efficient -7.62 nato is a bit overkill in most of the US.

Update: I went with niether, instead I bought 2k of ammo and some mags. The FAL was just to heavy for what I wanted and the AK while nice, meant investing in another caliber. I had to slap myself a bit and make the smart choice. I am going to be looking into Palmetto State Armory's 5.56 AKs that take AR mags and Kalashnikov USA or CAA's (or whoever is making it) Alpha AKs in 5.56.

I have a bad habit of thinking more like a lackluster collector instead of a prepper sometimes.

doesn't sound like a bad habit to me. my collection is just that, a collection, with some weapons that are also good for prepping. most of mine are not.
who would ever want an AR-7 pistol, or a USAF Zip gun for any practical reason

Ummm... wouldn't the AR-7 "pistol" be more of an SBR?

Huh! First I've ever heard of that one and I actually owned one of the original AR-7 rifles.

That was an extremely smart move, I think. I discovered a tote in the barn with 20 Magpul mags and 20 Glock 9mm magazines (17 and 32 rounders). It felt like Christmas in February! Need more ammo though...except now I'm addicted to 410's so I have to stock up on that. Geeze. It never ends...
