Your on the freeway heading home from work 3am-5am in the morning
Tensions are high between US Iran/Russia Oil, Natural resources Related WMD related issues. US has instituted a Naval Blockaid between the
Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman preventing Iran from Selling
Oil and its others Natural resources. You hear on the radio that US
naval forces attached to the blockaid has exchanged fire with
Russian warships Escorting Iranian Oil Tankers Russia has sunk a
US Aircraft Carrier with a low yed Tac Nuke and we responed in kind.
Then you hear the EAS on the radio what do you do?

I need to turn off my auto-refresh before typing a long response.
Thank GOD for the paranoid 70s, my house has basement bomb shelter, supposed to be able to withstand the blast, which is good because odds are very good that it would be dropped about a mile from my house. That is... if the Russians are helping attack, or if the Iranians got the Russian list of most effective targets to bomb in order to cripple the American military. Seeing as we're in the top 10, we're screwed (That's the kind of thing you hate to hear about on the news "The list of where Russia's nukes had been pointed for half a century has been released and we were number 7 on the list!") Hopefully they attack for the most kills, as we'd only yield about 5,000 however it would really hit the military once we were gone, so, hope for dumbness!! I don't wanna be vaporized =(
So at least I can say I'm prepared, plenty of water, canned food and boxed food, frozen food that would need to be eaten first, hell even an oven, don't know how much any of that would work once we were hit, but while we waited...

Ummm... Head to my BOL. This is what being a survival enthusiast is all about. If you're only preparing for a zombie apocalypse, then you aren't preparing worth a damn. Factor general wind direction and likely fallout patterns into your choice of a BOL, and you should be fine in a nuclear exchange, provided you have proper warning.

He's right, if your BOL can't help you for a nuclear attack then what good is it? My BOL, through the nature of being quickly reachable, is still within this blast zone, but I'm prepared for all other forms of disaster, moving up to Indiana this fall will be tough, establish a new team... a new BOL... scout my locale *sigh*

According to this Nuclear Weapon Target Map for Missouri FEMA-196/September 1990) Thoses of us in ZS liveing in St Louis

That isn't what you really have to worry about either. The big thing to concern yourself with is fallout patterns. Basically, if you live anywhere downwind from a dense pack, you need to have a well laid out bugout strategy.

Keep in mind, many of these sites and dense packs are no longer in service, and as such, are no longer targets. Find out about the ones in your area and keep a wary eye on the wind.

Well according to the map I'm boned. Oh well, I for one don't mind glowing for a few hundred years. The way I see it I'll save a shitload of money on batteries. Hell, I'll BE a battery!

Ok, I guess instead of just prayin', I'd do as follows:
assuming I wasn't killed by a primary blast, I'd bug out initially to a location outside the blast radii of all the surrounding major cities. Where I live, if I could get away from the nearest one, I'd be OK. The midwest isn't exactly target-rich since the end of the cold war.
Then, I'd keep an eye on the sky and an ear to the radio to figure out the places getting hit hard. I suppose I'd then try to get out of the way of fallout, traveling according to the reports of destruction. Maybe Canada. Maybe someplace in a remote part of the US. Maybe I'll comandeer NORAD!

I'd take the first flight out to Walt Disney World. I'd be able to ride Mission: Space all day long without standing in line. That would be sweet.
Actually, I'd pack my car and go visit my parents 300 miles further inland from here. I'm too close to the border for my comfort if y'all are engaging in nuclear fisticuffs.

Well,
I actually intend on having some kind of shelter for nuclear scenarios. The main problem is affordability as well as not having the neighbors calling the Goon Squad to come and take you to the 'Thorizine Rubber Room Paradise'.
I live near 4 really juicy targets: MacDill AFB/CentComm, Tampa Port Authority, Tampa International Airport and Crystal River Nuclear Power Plant.
If my area dont get quadruple plus pasted from MIRVs, there is still the likelihood some Jihadist scumbag will decide the whole Florida West Coast needs to glow in the dark by blowing up Crystal River.

Why was Oregon totally free of fallout in that picture...
If I knew the target I would immediately drive in the opposite direction of it as far as I could go and when the bomb hits take cover in the backseat under as much covering as I can scavenge to protect myself from initial radiation. Assuming I survive I can listen to the radio and get myself upwind of the fallout zone.
If I didn't know the target or suddenly witness the mushroom cloud I would pull over, take cover, and assuming I survive and my vehicle is in order, head upwind and hope that was the only one.

Yes, $20, and even that would be more then enough if you were willing to harvest the support poles yourself. These weren't lavish accomodations by any means. They were designed to be constructed by about 2 people within under 36 hours and protect everyone from fallout, if not the blast itself.Nightside_Eclipse wrote:$20?!?!?!?ripped0ff wrote:You can build an old Civil Defense style expedient shelters in your backyard, and then plant a garden on it so that it isn't so conspicuous. It wouldn't cost you more then about $20 and some time too.
NORAD would probably one of the first places hit! They would probably want to take out military installations first that could give US an early warning system. Yeah, I know NORAD is inside Cheyenne Mountain, but you can't really count on that protecting you from a Nuclear Blast, if an ICBM landed directly on top of the mountain.namaarie wrote:Ok, I guess instead of just prayin', I'd do as follows:

If a nuclear war broke out, there is a 90% chance you will die.
Unlike a zombie epidemic, you cant fight it and even if you stayed underground, unless it has made of thick lead you'd be screwed.
also, if the radiation or blast doesnt kill you, not being able to regain supplys will.
There would be no need for guns
(cant shoot at radiation now can we?)
BOB's would be useless
there is no real way you can prepare, unless you move out the US that is.
There are 80,000 nukes in the world, enough to blow the world up 10 times over (literally).
