Tactical Wedding Ring
OK, so I'll proposing soon and that got me thinking about my own inevitable wedding ring and making it serve some practical/tactical purpose. For instance what metal (or ceramic?) would have unique and useful properties? Palladium can absorb 900 times its volume of hydrogen which is cool, but that doesn't have an apparent use to me, tungsten is really hard, do any other metals have uniquely useful electrical or other properties? Then there is the gem (I probably won't get one, but hey since we're on this bizarre subject) I know you can flip a diamond over and get a nice little point, certain crystals would be useful for building a radio, what else could be taken into account?
I know this is a weird subject, but I've just been thinking about it a lot lately.

Platinum is a Great Catalyst for a lot of chemical reactions.
However, this may be a bad thing, supposing you accidentally catalysed a reaction and produced something toxic (as I have seen happen in my chemistry class with Nickel Spatula's).
Really, I don't think you should use your wedding ring as a Tactical Aid at all. I mean, would your wife approve of you using your wedding ring as a Transistor?

You never know, MacGyver would probably be able to make a shrapnel bomb from a wedding ring 2 toothpicks and a piece of gum.Ad'lan wrote:Platinum is a Great Catalyst for a lot of chemical reactions.

Re: Tactical Wedding Ring
Part of me wants to say, "cool, let's think of nifty ideas".
Then the other part of me says,
"DEAR GOD MAN ARE YOU OUT YOUR MIND? BUY GOLD, PLATINUM AND/OR DIAMONDS OR
SHE'S GOING TO SMACK YOU IN THE FACE WITH A FRYING PAN AND NEVER LET YOU FORGET THIS
FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE".
.....pant-pant-pant.....ok, I feel better now.

I am aware of just how ludicrous this probably is, and I would never dare buy her anything but real jewerly, but for myself I am willing to wear something else as long as it LOOKs more or less like normal jewelry.
Besides, if nothing else I think this has great entertainment value.

Re: Tactical Wedding Ring
If your reason for not wanting a normal wedding ring is that you think they look too frivolous, get a bead-blasted titanium one. They're only about $150 and completely indestructible.

I think wedding rings are very personal items that have a lot of meaning to the most important
people in the equation - the bride and groom.
If she's open to it, I think discussing it with her might be fun (if it's not a surprise proposal).
I was just bustin' your chops.

Re: Tactical Wedding Ring
My second wedding band (my second wife wouldn't let me re-use my first wedding band... dunno why) is titanium. It's aircraft grade, whatever that means. Cost me $189. Would have cost be about $50 less, but I had them make me one with a platinum inlay in it, rather than the normal white gold one. I figured it made sense to match the frigging thousands I spend on the wife's platinum wedding set. No one would have known it was white gold instead of platinum, but why fuck with karma? Burned me the first marriage.
Mine looks like this one, but instead of a gold inlay mine's platinum.

Re: Tactical Wedding Ring
I wouldn't go so far as to try to use it to make anything, but my main concern with my wedding band was durability (I'm pretty hard on jewelry). I went with a tungsten carbide band:

Harder than titanium and virtually unscratchable. Only disadvantage is they can't resize it...

She will pick this stuff out. You STFU and write checks. Trust me on this.

Re: Tactical Wedding Ring
We had a Reservist transferred to our unit in Iraq who was a jeweler in his civilian job. He traded in his regular gold band for a titanium one while deployed. It was super light, and he whacked it with a hammer several times, didn't have a scratch on it.

My wife is an EMT and assures me that just about any ER will have a jeweler's saw capable of handling a titanium or tungsten ring.KeepItSimpleStupid wrote: Ive heard some (probably urban legend) horror stories about the more exotic ring materials... like surgeons dont have the tools to cut off a titanium ring in an emergency, so they cut off the finger instead and reattach it afterwards - if you can afford it. Re: Tactical Wedding Ring
I have pretty much decided against gold for either mine or hers (she's allergic) and platinum is out of the question expensive, so that's part of it. Most I am just interested in using the ring for some kind of practical purpose, or atleast knowing there is something useful about it that could be important if TSHTF.
As I said before, her rings wll be normal.

She's Allergic to Gold? Are you sure?
Was it maybe the Copper in Red Gold, rather than the Pure gold it'self? I've never heard of a gold Allergy before.

Could always use it at a bartering item. Depends what it is made of and what gems are on the ring.

Not sure if it's gold, nickel, or copper, but all three metals are in both yellow and white gold
One idea that came up in the chat was using it for starting fires. I always carry a firesteel and if the ring had some kinda fancy rough inlaid surface and was made of tungsten carbide it would probably make a great striker.

I would not even discuss this with her. She will probably "help" you pick out your ring.....and you had better go along with it.

Re: Tactical Wedding Ring
She will think it's funny, and probably make fun of me about it for the rest of our lives.

Just remember with Titanium - if you're injured and your finger swells for whatever reason - they can't cut it off easily.
It'd be easier to cut off your finger.
