It seems to me the value here isn't that you can slack off on your physical conditioning because everyone is a lot more capable than we think, but rather: in critical situations we all have that extra gear we can kick into. The trick is knowing it's there and having the will to access it.
If you've ever run a marathon, survived a natural disaster, or given birth, you know that your body is capable of much more than you think. One U.S. Navy SEAL has formalized this idea into something many call the 40 percent rule. That is, when your mind says you're done, you're only 40 percent done.
