The real lesson is an old burn-in hole will work again. No need to make more work than required in case someone is dependent on this method for a longer duration. The spindles do not even need to be the same. The old V- cut etc etc will be ok so long as there is enough wood remaining to keep the spindle from hitting the ground. Granted there are no absolutes so everything is within reason.
I will just rough up the spindle some to increase friction. Remember yea want friction on the fire board (within reason) but not on the bearing block.
Worked just fine.
