Michigan Hams on 2m

Post by charadeur » Sun Mar 03, 2013 1:05 am

Okay lets try this. How many of you are in the Michigan LP? If you are a ham you know about the great IRA linked repeater system on 2m. Is anyone interested in doing a net on the IRA linked repeaters. These cover most of the LP and can be accessed with a $50 hand held radio and a technician class license. And if you don't have a technician class license there are Ham in a Day classes held all over the state where for a small fee you can get your license in a day. No code required like when I did mine.

Okay it seems we are going no where. How about this? One person. Does one other ham want to PM me and we will talk on the IRA repeaters and see where it goes from there? Come on guys lets get something organized.

Can you guys hit the Jackson IRA repeater at 145.47 using a 100.0 or 107.2 Hz tone? Standard offset. If you guys can hit that one we can do a net.

I'm guessing not..

on a repeater about 7 miles away my signal is passable..

keep in mind, trailhopper and I are both running 4watt HT's

Well that is too bad. I built one of these J-pole antennas for cheap and it works very well.

The down side is the cable needed for UHF/VHF is expensive if you are running it more than 25 feet or so. The inexpensive cable is too lossy for any longer than that. I can hit a Lansing repeater that is probably 45 miles away as the crow flies but that is 50W.

Are those repeater freqs easy to find on google?
My heir, the son I should have had, is from Michigan and is returning there next month. Somewhere in the UP. I've been trying to get him on the air, and he has expressed an interest...

Here is the IRA Linked repeater system web site so you can get an idea of the coverage. Hit one and it is linked and re-transmitted to all of them.
http://www.w8hvg.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Rebel you can hook up a nice roof mount antenna on your HT. I have a UV6 and the other brand (Boefung or however it is spelled) and can hook my base antenna to them if I am too lazy to bring my 8800 in from the vehicle. That works fine for me doing the Skywarn and RACES nets in the area.

Been a ham for a couple years but rarely if ever used my radio. Was unaware of the IRA repeater links. While I live in SE MI, I have property near Houghton Lake which looks like it might have coverage.

Let me know if you can hit that repeater. They don't like people rag chewing too much on the links because it ties up all of them but we could get away with 15 minutes or so. We may get others to jump in and can educate those who don't know about this site and what we do.
