The weather looks nice for this weekend:

http://www.weather.com/weather/5-day/12945" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A chance of snow on each of the days, and some pretty serious cold on Saturday night (down below zero).

There has been a little new snow since our thaw, but plan on hard crust rather than hip-deep powder. The pond should be sufficiently frozen for hiking...I've seen trucks parked out on the lake on my way to work, to save hard-working fishermen the 200 yard walk out to their sit-in beer-coolers (I mean fishing shacks).

I'm still planning on camping the second night out at a remote campsite...not sure if I'll need/use snowshoes, but I'm bringing them, as well as poles and a throw-bag in case I, or someone else, goes through the ice and needs a pull-out.

I'll be there sometime Friday morning, and can't wait to see everyone else!

The National Weather Service forecast looks even better -- about 10° colder than weather.com's on Friday night and Saturday. Might be a bit windy during the day, though. I'm getting good and excited about this trip; going to start gathering and packing tonight.

I saw Mike suggested a range day. Anybody else interested? My old Mosin really deserves to come out and play in the cold once in a while...

I'll bring the blasters and BBs up either way, and if anyone wants to they can give them a go.

I am going to bring my .22 pellet. Underground Weather is calling for below 0 for both nights, and -1 for Saturday.

I'm out of this one. Found out at today's meeting in Syracuse that my remote access servers are being migrated to a "cloud" so I need to go in tomorrow and and close all the open cases for the region before the migration on Saturday.
Theoretically, I could pull a Bunsen and come up after I get all the work done, but I just don't think I can handle the drive after a day of calling assistance clients and hours of brain killing data entry.
Hopefully there will be another event soon.

It was a great time! I feel sorry for the people too busy or wimpy to come...it was a super trip with cold sleeping and no fatalities for all...

I think after the 1st NNYWCT (five now!) I posted a bunch of "things I learned". As we continue doing these trips, the learning curve shallows out but I still have a few thoughts/observations...

The second night we reached about -9F. At home I probably have to get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night less than once a month, it pretty much never happens. Saturday night I had to get up TWICE. It's crazy how the cold makes ya go.

The WCT is probably not the best time and place to test out brand-new gear. I used a new hammock this time (a "Ticket To The Moon Double which I like a lot). I did have issues with being less-than-warm at times (I really can't say "cold"), I think the extra sag I hang this hammock with meant that my typical way of hanging the underquilt made it too tight. I think in the future I will stick with my DD hammock for deep cold, it has two layers which is great for pad use and size-wise, it's a great match with the DD UQ.

As a corollary to that, on "the night of -36F" I remember using a CCF pad in addition to the UQ and hammock sock. CCF pads are the honey badger of under-insulation, they just don't give a shit. You can hang an UQ wrong (too loose or too tight=shivers), but if you're on top of the CCF, it's going to do what it's going to do.

Tried a propane stove this year (full circle, I used a small propane stove the first year as well). It worked great, propane makes a good basecamp stove fuel in deep cold.

As always, had a great time with my fellow crazies. Thanks to all who came out!
