I still don't think there's going to be a coming civil war, as most people are still sane and sane people want no part of any such conflict, and have a strong aversion to harming others. However, if we have a full-scale economic collapse - a much more probable scenario, IMHO, given our unsustainable public and private debt situation, then we could see fissures along various societal fault lines, but that would be more an "each against all" scenario. Which might even be worse.

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that all we can do is remember that one day we will give an account to our Creator for what we did or didn't do in this life, and try to live accordingly. That includes trying to reach out to people who hold views that are diametrically opposed to my own, and see if we can't find some common ground. It also means looking out for my neighbors. The rest, other than making prudent preparations for whatever happens to come down the pike, is pretty much out of my hands.
I am not seeing how anything discussed above could happen with speed needed so that no one could do anything to stop it.

It reminds me of Y2K:

1. "It's going to happen & there is nothing that anyone can do about it".

2. The livelyhoods of the majority of the planet would be affected.

3. Who in their right minds would want to allow such. i.e. - sit back and let it happen: see #1.

4. some people were brought back in the labor market, some to work, but some to teach the 'kids' old code so "the world didn't end".

I'm not seeing the number of people necessary just sitting around & not 'doing anything' for: Civil War, Societal Collapse, Total Economic Collapse; or as occurred to me:
...dogs & cats, in IKEA, holding hands, looking at nursery furniture...

Am I making sense... :?:
Have you looked at France recently?
1. Good point. Recent development. There is a difference between our societies & cultures, but we are all overblown primates with a pollex people. Relevant to the topic.

2. I can see disruption. I do not see anything leading to collapse.

You guys smell that ? It smells like normalcy bias. I hope you guys are right. But I'm kind of a pessimist and I really don't see any leaders capable of being the statesmen our country needs to bring us back from the brink.

Do you think the citizens in Paris hoped cooler heads would prevail? Ferguson? Los Angeles in 92 ? I think about what people who were living in truly tumultuous times thought. Europe in the late thirties. Russia in 1917.

more societal collapse than civil war, mind you the French population have always been very good at protesting and rioting.
wife can remember a time when they dumped tonnes of rotting tomatoes on the quayside in protest of low prices for their produce.

America will keep on changing into something we won't recognize or want but the great grandchildren will view it as normal. Find someone in their 90's and ask them what they think about America right now. Answers are generally that they prefer the America of their youth, don't care for cell phones or computers and feel life now is to complicated and rushed.

you're comparing things ( cell phones and puters ) to beliefs and ideas. The speed of life never causes rebellion. The quality of life will though.
Republican,Democrat are different sides of the same coin. Socialism is a different currency.
Don't force your great grandchildren to fight to take back the rights you allow to be taken away.

It seems Marcon bought himself a little time with the torches & pitchforks crowd, but not everyone is cool:

NPR: Gunman Attacks French Christmas Market, Killing At Least 2 And Wounding Several

Bloomberg: Emmanuel Macron's Euro Zone Dream Died This Week

Bloomberg: Macron Just Doesn’t Get It

It really is hard for me to imagine it happening here, which is foolish because if it can happen 'there' it can happen anywhere. Everywhere you go on the mudball, you will find Human Beings. People are people. Always have been, always will be.

But it really is hard for me to imagine that, three blocks away, a violent mob is physically storming the Statehouse to lynch anyone they find inside. I was Army Guard during the great flood of 1993. No tap for three weeks. I still haven't heard of any vandalism from that, much less anything worse.

The 2011 London "riots" showed us here how quickly a mob can get out of hand, and they were only looting wide screen TV's and mobile phones not food!

It seems you never talk to people much over your own age? I have a bunch of relatives in their 90's who are quite sharp. They see cell phones and computers as an enabler of bad changes being embraced and promoted by the so-called Millenials. Millenials who vote for "free" education and "free" healthcare, who also believe the 2nd Amendment should be heavily restricted. Miilenials and their beliefs are in all 50 states so moving from one to another is not effective at avoiding the millenials' influence on laws.

How is your running away to another state preventing California from taking away someone's rights? There is an upper limit on how many times you can run away by moving but in the end your grandchildren will have to fight what you ran away from.

I remember well the riots in NYC, starting with the Harlem Riots in '64 (we lived on the upper west side of Manhattan at the time, in a city housing project just south of Harlem), the Hard Hat Riot of 1970 (my family has long been in the construction industry in NYC, was very pro-union and in favor of the Vietnam War, and I was a high school student at the time, so I was sort of in the middle, with feelings on both sides of the incident), and then the riots during the '77 Blackout, which I spent sitting armed in front of my dad's store (he rented a storefront in Brooklyn to store equipment in) to keep it from being looted. This was right after I'd gotten off active duty. One of the last places I'd been in the Navy was Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, where there had also been rioting and looting. (we were bringing in aid supplies after a disaster)

All of this serves to make me take discussion of civil unrest/war very, very seriously.

It's instructive to watch the "yellow vest" movement, and unrest, in France. People are getting crushed by high taxes and the inexorable rise in the cost of living, while their wages and benefits stagnate. The straw that broke the camel's back was a carbon tax. PM Macron, who was elected with 2/3 of the vote in 2017, is now increasingly isolated and unpopular, although he has tried to make concessions to mollify the demonstrators. Ordinary people accuse him of running the country for the exclusive benefit of the corporations and financial elites, and now they're rioting in the streets. Not sure how that's going to solve any problems, but it's definitely got the government's attention.

Somewhat related, just finished reading "Hillbilly Elegy," which documents the plight of a redneck clan, and the working poor more generally, in Appalachia. Economic malaise and hopelessness is fertile ground for all kinds of bad things.

Another Wikipedia page with a more historical/world outlook: List of riots

Take part or DIE! List of Food Riots

Parallel to the OP topic: List of Revolutions and Rebellions

Power to the Mommy-Parts! Uprisings led by Women & List of women who led a revolt or rebellion & Women in the American Revolution

Going into Women who served & still serve this Grand Republic....would probably double the size of this database

Maybe triple it....

"When Money Dies" by Adam Fergusson is another must-read, that uses the historical example of the Weimar Republic's hyperinflation to show what happens when the purchasing power of currencies collapse. Central banks have printed more than $16 trillion in "stimulus" since 2009; any attempts to print away government or corporate debts (inevitable in my mind, since our $22 trillion national debt is almost certainly going to be either repudiated or printed away) could take us down this road.
