Not a quick question but one for Rick O'Shea.
From this day to the ending of the world,

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother

Let me see if I understand the question. Worst case scenario zombie apocalypse with most of the population dead, bugged out or Jonsing really hard for brains and you want to know how many days there will still be electrical power, so you can go steal a TV Dinner from the grocery store?
As of now I bet you got me wrong

Well in all fairness "raiding" could mean stuff he wants to buy hostilely and not a surprise attack to steal from business premises. I mean I know it is a first post and all but there is no way he would come over here and tell us he was going to break the law at the first opportunity he saw. After all that would be in direct contravention to the forum rules and really dickish besides.

It varies regionally, and can vary seasonally, but I believe most coal-fired power plants keep around a 30 to 60 day stockpile on-site.

One thing to keep in mind, if there truly was a zombie incident, it's probable many places would lose power immediately due to things that happen in panic situations (i.e. a truck taking out a telephone pole for example). I would expect to lose power immediately and be thankful if you don't. Based on my experience with natural disasters, don't expect it back for at least a week after the emergency is over.

Not sure how you're getting energy from that nuclear power plant in 2018, it's closed.
Has been for years.
See link below.
----
https://www.duke-energy.com/our-company ... stal-river
In July 2015, the decommissioning Crystal River Nuclear Plant, known as CR3, reached its SAFSTOR condition.

SAFSTOR is one of three decommissioning options approved by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and a common option selected by other retired nuclear plants.

With SAFSTOR, the plant is placed in a safe, stable condition and maintained in that state until it is decontaminated and dismantled at the end of the storage period.

Systems that are no longer needed are drained, de-energized and secured. However, various activities continue, such as 24-hour security operations and preventative and corrective maintenance on certain systems. Though simplified to reflect the condition of the plant, security and emergency response plans as well as radiological and environmental monitoring programs also continue throughout the decommissioning.

As has been pointed out a power plant working or not is only as good as the system the transports the generated power to the user. Something as simple as squirrel can knock out power to a large geographic area.

This site emphasises preparation. So plan ahead stock food, water and alternate power sources so that a power outage even a permanent one is nothing more than a PITA.

Amen preach it brother!

BTW have I thanked you lately for the miracles that you and your co-workers do after storms?

Thanks.....And you'll probably never see a power company truck try to dodge a squirrel that's trying to run across the road.

I've frankly never seen a power company truck try to dodge anything here, that is what bullbars are for. But a question, distributed power systems. Where I am nearly every 2nd house has solar panels feeding energy into the grid, sucks following a cyclone, but something to think about

Remember with grid tied solar panels systems( which are popular in the US) without utility or generator power they are automatically shut down.

Unless you have a battery bank and full stand alone system, a generator is likely to be required.

Which BTW requires its own distribution system, albeit under your control. :D

Solar panels are improving and will continue to improve but they have a key flaw. They can generate power only when the sun is shining. So you need an array that produces the total power consumed in a 24 hour period (including huge power losses going from dc to a.c.)during daylight hours and store the surplus in a large battery bank.

That typically is a very large panel farm and many batteries. So it would not be cheap. Also as noted they may be damaged in a windstorm.

It is certainly doable but in many cases a simple system using a generator is preferable...at least in non ZPAW situations.

BTW do NOT forget the utility disconnect/transfer switch!
You risk back feeding to the utility grid. The linemen working on restoring power will be phased if you backfeed their line; they may consider you to be a squirell. :D

I'll have to check that, I think that is what happens here (Queensland, Australia) but I'll have to double check
