Prepare to be nuked? (Article is biased and political but contains useful information)

http://www.businessinsider.com/nuclear- ... ter-2017-3

If a nuclear bomb is dropped on your city, here's where you should run and hide

Dave Mosher and Andy Kiersz

    • People who survive a nuclear blast may be exposed to radioactive ash and dust called fallout.
Finding a good shelter as soon as possible and going inside is critical to surviving fallout.
A scientist has come up with a strategy for when and whether to move to a better fallout shelter.
So you might be wondering, "If I survive a nuclear-bomb attack, what should I do?"

Michael Dillon, a Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory researcher, crunched the numbers and helped figure out just that in a 2014 study published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

Likewise, government agencies and other organizations have also explored the harrowing question and came up with detailed recommendations and response plans.

"The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes"

This could devolve into politics really quickly. Suffice to say, the current president of the United States has expressed an interest in expanding the nuclear arsenal.

I started a thread that got locked (seems to happen a lot ) that attempted to discuss just that.

viewtopic.php?p=2652666#p2652660

Ignore the bias of the 'news' article and sift out the facts, please.

And remember- in 2017, all media is biased. Unbiased journalism has been dead for decades, and I would actually make the historical argument that it has never existed.

This whole thread started with some interest in the Chinese rattling their nuclear sabre so I was interested in a media outlet reviving the topic of surviving a nuclear bomb. Those of us living on the west coast are a little closer to being nuked by the Koreans or the Chinese so the article piqued my interest.

Agreed- and I'm about to move my family within 60 miles of one of the only targets that (I think) N. Korea might actually be able to hit- today. At least we will be upwind of CGS Kodiak.

So I get the interest and concern- I'm right there with you. China, I think, is stable enough as a Nation and with its leadership that their saber-rattling is just that- posturing. They of course want to expand their sphere of influence, hence what they are doing in the South China Sea.

North Korea on the other hand is not stable in it's government or its leadership. All evidence would suggest that their 'elected' leader has just committed fratricide. We are right to be concerned about that regime.

The quote was from the article. The article is speaking hypothetically but yes it has a political bias and we should not quote the politically biased comments when posting a link to an article. The No Politics Rule applies even when you quote an article. The best way to post such a link is to redact any politics in the quote and mention that the link contains politics.

Please no politics.

QFT - Hyperbole is now an accepted journalistic "style".

The attached article does have good advice in re dealing with fallout. Ignore the political slant and harvest the data.

We live in interesting and dangerous times. It may behoove us all to go to our libraries and read the Civil Defense manuals from the cold war. That and make sure your CDV-715 is working AND calibrated.

What Do China's Military Strategists Think of the Battle of Midway?

http://nationalinterest.org/feature/wha ... dway-20990

"Today, on the other side of the Pacific, the Midway battle seems to have become a rather hot study topic in contemporary Chinese naval circles. Maybe this is not particularly surprising given that Beijing has just launched its second aircraft carrier and is thought to be hard at work on the third. A long article in the Chinese naval magazine Modern Ships published by the enormous ship-building conglomerate CSIC, is especially interesting. The focus of the piece, entitled “The Road to Midway Island” does not take up the tactics, the technologies, nor the heroism involved, but undertakes a strictly disciplined examination of the planning choices made by the Japanese military leadership during the spring of 1942. Thus, among the ingredients that produced the miracle at Midway, this Chinese analysis is focused on “strategic acumen,” or lack thereof, and how Tokyo squandered such a militarily favorable position so quickly."

"Sure looks like China has a ship-mounted railgun"

https://www.yahoo.com/news/sure-looks-c ... 15169.html

Some photos posted by Dafeng Cao, a Twitter user who keeps close tabs on Chinese military developments, show a ship-mounted gun that could very well be the country's very own homegrown electromagnetically propelled mass driver.

'Leave immediately or you will pay': China is threatening foreign ships and planes, but the US military isn't changing a thing

Full Article: https://www.businessinsider.com/china-w ... pay-2018-7

The U.S. Navy and regional allies have reportedly noticed an increase in Chinese radio queries to foreign ships and planes operating in the South China Sea, some less than friendly and others actually threatening.

"Leave immediately," Chinese forces in the disputed Spratly Islands warned earlier this year when a Philippine military aircraft flew to close to a Chinese outpost, according to the Associated Press, citing a new Philippine government report.

"Philippine military aircraft, I am warning you again, leave immediately or you will pay the possible consequences," the Chinese military threatened when the plane refused to leave the area.

In the latter half of last year, Philippine military aircraft patrolling near contested territories received at least 46 radio warnings. While these warnings have traditionally been delivered by Chinese coast guard units, the messages are now being broadcast by personnel stationed at military outposts in the South China Sea.

US military pilots chatting with unhappy Chinese navy folks on their little islands

The first video has a lot of neat shots of the islands and also the interior of the P-8

U.S. Sailors assigned to Patrol Squadron (VP) 45 conduct flight operations aboard a P-8A Poseidon over the Spratly Islands in South China Sea, May 20. VP-45 is on deployment supporting U.S. 7th Fleet operations in the Pacific.

US Navy P-8A Poseidon 168758 ‘LC-758’ assigned to Patrol Squadron 8 (VP-8) ‘Fighting Tigers’ takes off from Kadena Air Base, Japan, on November 29.
