Labour Day Mock Bug Out

Post by BullOnParade » Sat Aug 10, 2013 12:32 pm

Those Crazy Canucks are at it again, another trip deep into the rugged wilderness that we call home. This time around, Labour Day weekend (Aug 31 to Sept 2), we will be back on the piece of heavily forested private property North of Belleville (near Tweed, Ontario). For those of you who haven't been there with us before, the landlocked plot is very removed from the civilized world, but relatively easy to access. One leg of the trip is driven in, followed by a roughly 2 mile hike to the cleared camp site, complete with fire pit and chemical outhouse (for those who have yet to take a lesson from the bears). While the site is well equipped, you are expected to hike your own gear in for those two miles. Gear you will require: shelter, sleeping bag, seasonal appropriate clothing, mess kit, food for yourself and an award winning ZS attitude. If you don't have this gear, but are still interested in coming, speak up. The chapter and several of our members have pieces of loaner equipment that people are more than welcome to use, but these items are first come, first serve. Gear you may want, but do not necessarily need: bug spray, sunscreen, flashlight/headlamp, camp knife.

While the property is fairly removed, we have fail safes in place to help us in the event something goes wrong. More than one ell stocked first aid kit, and a 4x4 capable of making a quick egress in a medical emergency are just two examples of ways we are prepared for some of the worst case scenarios applicable. Bears are not a concern on this property. Sign has yet to be seen, and we are isolated enough that the smell of people is not an invitation to a free meal. However, we do try to practice bear safety, at the very least for educational purposes, and airtight 5 gallon buckets are on site to store food in. Other forms of wildlife are plentiful however, so if you consider yourself an animal watcher, keep an eye out for signs of deer, elk, coyote, fox, porcupine, and bullfrogs, and more birds than I can confidently identify.

Anyone who would like to carpool, speak up, there will likely be vehicles leaving from Niagara Falls, and Toronto, more to confirm, so we might as well make sure they're full of people.

Lastly, for anyone on the fence about this trip, consider it this way; you're going to eat anyways, there's no piece of gear that you need that you cannot borrow, and rides are easily arranged. This trip shouldn't cost you much/anything if you don't want it to, and you're guaranteed to learn some new things, have some good laughs, eat some good food, and relax away from civilization.

Ok folks! Considering a change of venue for the camping weekend coming up!
The new property is a 2.5 acre plot near Marmora, ont.
Virgin site so we would need to start a campsite from scratch, but it has full road access, and a town about 2 miles up the road.

Any thoughts, yay or nay?

I'm always game for something new. Starting camp from scratch means a lot more bushcraft opportunities, less whittlin' a spoon 'cause I want too.

Yay! Let's do this. How close can we get the car?

bacpacboy and I are both looking forward to this one. Our schedule is still up in the air here but WE HAD SO MUCH FUN LAST TIME!!! (Bringing bacpacboy is one thing, but bacpacbaby is another story. Amoung other challenges of having a baby in the woods overnight, she doesn't sleep through the night yet, and that would just suck for everyone.)

Breaking new ground sounds exciting! Virgin woods to play in - how can you top that?!

If you haven't been out to one of these events yet - DO IT! It's a fantastic group of people, a very relaxing and enjoyable way to spend a weekend, and it's an awesome chance to work on your skills. And bacon.

I'm planning to make bannock and char cloth over the fire this time and bacpacboy is jonesin to build a shelter. Bull, do you think you could help me with that sharpening lesson? I've got a new to me old hatchet that needs some love.

p.s. We need more pictures this time to help entice everyone else to join us next time!
