Anyone know any good places for camping in Wyoming
Hi All,
I tried in the CO chapter forum and now I'm trying here
Does anyone know of or can recommend a good car camping spot in Wyoming? Here's additional info:
4-5 hour drive from Denver max
Car camping with tents, and possibly a pop-up trailer - should be an improved campsite (somewhat novice campers)
There will be 4 kids with bikes and fishing poles ranging in age from 4 - 11
Will be going this summer in July
Thanks,
Mtn Wanderer

This is right on the edge of your drive time limit, but if you happen to up in casper you can go up on casper mountain to beartrap meadows.. it's pretty up there, I think 10 bucks for the night, clean, has some vestibules with benches, outhouses, etc... no fishing on that spot...
If you go west from casper a half hour you can go to alcova reservoir and you can fish there, camp on the "beach" etc...

Vedauwoo is a pretty great place to camp. I've stayed there, and even recommended it to a friend who made the trip out there just to camp there and he loved it. It's about halfway between Cheyenne and Laramie on I-80. Should take about 2 hours or so from Denver, depending on I-25 traffic. The rock formations are fun to hike, and there was plenty of shade at the campsites.

Man, I can't wait to get out to WY this fall.
What about biking/bike camping? I'm moving to Riverton, and unfortunately I don't have a car.

I had a nice time hiking to and camping at the prior mountains wild horse Range.
Having a hard time posting link from wife's pad, Google prior mountain wild horse range, da.
Kind of a long steep walk from lovel so small kids might be tough, and not much water on route primitive camping on range unless you fine cabin camping but cool to see and hear the horses going about there buisness. When I got to the top of the range I found a cabin that is open to walkers if you don't mis treat it with a nice water source right next to it.
There is a road to the cabin but I don't know much about it. The name of the cabin is penns cabin, agin Google will get you there.
One of my favorite tripsever but would not consider driving a non 4x4 up to the range but again a real cool walk if you get up there check out the ice cave, worked as a nice break in the summer.

I second Vedauwoo, we went there a lot when we lived in Cheyenne, we try to stop any time we're driving past on i-80.Boris wrote:Vedauwoo is a pretty great place to camp. But it's so flat there and there's nothing to see in WY...
Not just nice, but beautiful. Went there for a summer wedding and was annoyed we weren't going somewhere tropical or obnoxioius like Las Vegas. I knew I was wrong when people got a glazed look on there face remembering their time in the area. I can't wait to go back.
Doubt is in the 5 hour range, but so worth it. Jenny Lake is worth it alone.Dawgboy wrote:Yellowstone is pretty nice... Also The Grand Tetons.

Go check out the Wind River Valley just outside of Lander as well (preferably during the summer). I spent a few days out there last year and it was absolutely gorgeous.

Note: I didn't listen to my own advice and went in March. This is what I woke up to the second morning

I'm sure there must be some nice camping in the Medicine Bow Mountains south of Laramie.

Guernsey State Park, in Guernsey (east of Wheatland). Spent March in a cabin there once, some lovely weather, also got snowed in for 4 days, because March in WY. Beautiful views, just down the road is Register Cliff, with names of pioneers from the Oregon trail carved in, and wheel ruts worn in the sandstone. (Also, if Burrito Brothers is still there, they have the best tacos I ever had).
(Also Wind River is beautiful country, I just never camped there.)
