Are they designed as a supplement to normal food, though, or can they actually replace meals? Would you get enough of the nutrients you need, or are they just meant to be supplemental calories to keep the weight on skinny people?

There exist, I know, powdered foods that are designed to be put through feeding tubes or given to people who can't handle solids; but they would most likely be medical-supply and not meant for people who are very active, as you would be if you had to bug out on foot.

Powdered food means you bring along more water though. It may not make that much difference.

They're not meal replacements. They lack vitamins, fiber, all sorts of good stuff that a body needs.

Weight-gain supplements are designed to top up your calories and protein. The assumption is that you add them to a healthy, mixed diet full of greens and vits and nutrients.

So you could keep going on 'em for a short while, but you'd gradually feel like crap, get lethargic and constipated: that whole Junk Food Diet feeling. Long-term you'd get wacky malnutrition problems and get fat at the same time - yay!

Short term, a week? You can do anything for a week: you can not eat at all for a week and your body will bluff it. Better than nothing, but I'd choose long-life food over Cartman shakes every time. If you do go this route, cache a bottle of multivitamins along with the stuff.

Liquid meal replacements are available from pharmacies (for people who can't eat solid food) and are a ton more expensive than Weight Gain 4000. Even those cause problems if you're on 'em for more than a month or two.

Drinking those shakes requires that you increase your water intake, or risk nasty constipation. Something to keep in mind.

I have protein powder in my rig, but not exclusively. It's a suplament to the other stuff. Meat might be hard to come by on the run, and it doesn't store too well. Carbs are easier to carry and store. Fat is most calorie dense but can go rancid over time. You need carbs, protein and fat for a balanced diet. Peanut butter might be a perfect survival food: 50% Fat, 25% Carbs, 25% Protein. There's lots of that in my sustainment pouches.

If you want all of the above in one package look at the slimfast meal replacement stuff.

You should be drinking lots of fluids anyway, so why not get some nutrition at the same time?

Hello
The key to gain weight is the combination of weight gain supplements and right stuff. Some supplements are Protein Powder, Leucine, Waxy Maize. And weight gain food are nuts, cheese, peanut butter.
Thanks
