Coconut Milk Powder - In coffee

Post by CG » Fri May 12, 2017 8:54 am

I picked some up on a whim, as we're suspicious that dairy is causing me problems and we're about to go on a weekend trip, and the less that needs to be refrigerated, the better. Now, I like coconut, and would not foist this upon my coconut-hating husband.

I was pleasantly surprised that it blends right into my coffee with a frother and no grit (but I'm still drinking). It gets a good bit of foam. Nice flavor, not overwhelming, but definitely coconutty.

I'll try to remember to report back once I try mixing it with a spoon or in a cup with a lid.

This is the stuff I'm using: https://www.amazon.com/Edward-Sons-Vega ... B015HT13H2

Picked it up at Natural Grocers. No refrigeration, etc.

Pretty certain this is going to be what I use for cream in my camping gear.

Cool. I'll have to see how it goes with my black tea.

I've been locked into NIDO (https://www.nestlenido.com/?gclid=CPTnv ... #aboutnido) as it is real milk. NIDO also works well as a coffee whitener.

Thanks for sharing.

NIDO is probably the most common brand of powdered milk over here, and when I still drank milk I discovered it was cheaper to buy the big can and use a shaker bottle (such as those that come with workout mixes) to mix batches as needed vs buying "fresh" milk here....the "fresh" milk actually having come into the country as powdered milk and been reconstituted and bottled at a nearby plant.

For what it's worth I recall that adding powdered NIDO to hot coffee was an iffy thing. Sometimes it would clump up in hot coffee and refuse to dissolve.
The powdered coconut milk works nicely, and for some really nummy coffee try using canned coconut milk.

Another option are squeeze tubes of condensed or enriched milk. Squeeze out a dolop in to the coffee and stir. Sometimes you'll get a hint of caramel flavor.

If only the tubes of milk were more available in North America. Even here in Alaska, I cannot find a local vendor.

BTW - NIDO is labeled as whole milk - the fat really limits the storage life unfortunately.
Most dry mix to milk is considered to be skim milk. I use DairyX brand dry non-fat milk for LTS. My main source was the local 'dairy'...

Still want to try the coconut milk...

If I remember, I'll price the stuff at the grocery store next time I go and then check to be sure I could ship it from the APO. Shipping to Alaska is never cheap.

mmm, Nestle sweetened condensed milk, available in both squeeze tube (great bug out morale boosting stuff) and cans. Available from all australian supermarkets.

I don't know about customs, but maybe I can send you some tubes of the condensed goodness?

Sweetened condensed milk in a can is a very common staple in my area. It is canned and has a 3 year + shelf life.

I use this in my coffee every day.

Like Raptor, I keep a few small cans of Eagle sweet condensed milk. If my DW doesn't get to it first.

As for the other, thanks, but I can order directly myself via Amazon.

That's pretty cool! I might pick some up, I always look for something shelf stable like that one of my favorite soups uses coconut milk and I don't always have it on hand! Thanks!

Hoki, you need to up your troll game. Everyone knows that innuendos only work properly within the first 3 days of trolling. That 72 hour window passed. You need to change it up. Any real troll with any shred of creativity and self-respect moves onto stereotypes after innuendos. After that, it goes to contrarian philosophies. The last and final stage is trust building to create credibility... which you then revert back to the first stage to start over.

Up your game. You're basically doing the "dick jokes" of trolling. This is middle school level. You're disappointing me more than you disappointed your own father.

OK well I'm not making a joke OE talking about penises! I'm actually talking about coconut milk or almond milk or soy milk. I love them all. I will drink 1 percent milk once in a while and I'm not vegetarian or vegan. I love meat.

Worked fine in coffee with just a spoon, and in oatmeal. It was yummy (though the husband did not approve, but he was warned before he tried it that it involved coconut).

Oh, and...

Crazy idea, but could we NOT turn every thread she posts in to being about Hoki and just move on with life?

Interesting non-dairy solution. I'll be curious about how it works (and tastes) after you've been using it for a while

What information would you be looking for (other than taste)? I tend to be wildly oblivious to random things sometimes.

Sometimes things taste great for a few days then I can tire of them if I consume it often. I've never tried powdered coconut milk and wonder if I might easily tire of the flavor of coconuts. Maybe the taste of coffee sort of buries it and it is not a factor?

My Mom's father led an adventurous life of boxing, being a cowboy and when he was very young he apparently served on a whaling ship. My Mom cannot recall where, but apparently he was shipwrecked and developed an "aversion" to coconuts :awesome:

I put a regular spoonful in just under a quart of coffee today, and didn't even taste the coconut.

I love adding coconut milk powder to my coffee. I do not tolerate lactoze and it is a perfect solution for me.
