When you sell something using PayPal, you should never instruct the buyer to use the Gift option. Buyers lose all protections offered by PayPal for purchases (should a dispute arise) and it's a violation of the terms you agreed to when you signed up for your PayPal account.

Another thing you can't do is to list a price and then tell people purchasing from you via PayPal to add 3% to the sale price to cover the "PayPal fees". The proper way to account for the PayPal transaction fees is to list a PayPal price and then a discounted cash or money order price. Your asking price needs to include that extra 3% if you want to get paid for it, because explicitly listing a price and then listing an additional 3% for a PayPal transaction fee is also a violation of the terms you agreed to when you signed up for your PayPal account.

We aren't in the business of intervening in purchases arranged through the ZS Trading Post, but we are going to be revising our rules about selling and this is one of those rules that we want to make sure everyone is aware of.

PayPal protection: https://cms.paypal.com/cgi-bin/us/?cmd=_render-content&content_ID=security/buyer_protection

PayPal terms of service: https://cms.paypal.com/c2/cgi-bin/?cmd=_render-content&content_ID=ua/UserAgreement_full

Under the terms of service document, refer to sections 7.2 for what sorts of transactions are eligible for protection and section 7.3 for the transactions that are NOT eligible for protection (namely gift payments).

Is this a caveat emptor or a standing rule that ZS is maintaining?

When does this rule change take effect?

Will we be required to go in and edit our sale threads ASAP when it takes effect, or will this only apply to sale threads from this point forward?

We're going to update the rules in the trading post, treat this post as a rule going forward.

Selling in violation of PayPal's terms can get your account suspended, so it's generally a good thing to do to prevent that from happening.

It's about time, it's driven me nuts that people purposely ask for the 3%, which makes it very apparent that they never read the terms of service for using Paypal, which makes me not want to buy anything from them.

Agreed... I backed out of a few sales here because the seller wanted an extra 3%, and when told that was a violation of PayPal, they would get hostile... YES MEMBERS HERE on ZS!
