Hummer's to be replaced soon?

Post by PistolPete » Mon Sep 05, 2005 8:29 pm

It looks like the military is looking for something to replace the hummers for urban use. It'll be interesting to see what comes out of this.

Too bad the retired HMMWVs (Humvees) won't be offered for civilian sale.

Thanks for the second link. That thing looks sweet, if nothing else. Nice find.

why is that?
Two reasons. The official reason is they aren't certified for on road use, meaning they can't be licensed. The real reason is AM General made it part of the contract with the military. If there were cheap ex-mil hummers available on the surplus market, the civilian models wouldn't sell as well. They learned this with jeeps after ww2. The cheap jeeps hit the market, and people picked 'em up for use on farms, which hurt tractor sales.

It would be nice to pick up an ex-mil hummer, but we won't be seeing any in the states at least.

I think the problem is the military is using hummers in an environment they weren't made for. They're taking lightly armored vehicles into heavy combat zones, and then wondering why they're getting shot up. HMMM! I wonder....
The Hummer is, in my eyes at least, supposed to be a scout vehicle. Not an APC.
