Dogan's car replacement quest, or, talk me out of a hybrid Escape.

Post by Dogan » Tue Nov 05, 2019 1:18 pm

Howdy all.

Just rolled over a quarter million miles in the 2005 Forester I got in large part thanks to comments on azrael99's "Looking for a compact SUV or AWD vehicle" thread, and I think it's time to retire it.

AWD has been nice especially in the rare snow but realistically I'm chasing fuel economy more. I probably drive 8000-10000 miles a year for work between commuting and transporting clients, and with that mostly being city driving the Forester has been averaging 21.5 MPG per tank. Better than my old Crown Victoria but I think I can do better.

Enter a 2008-2012 FWD Escape hybrid. 34 MPG city, can find them under 150k miles and under $8000. Rarely at KBB of $5000-ish.

Why not a hybrid car? I did a lot of loading walkers and wheelchairs into the back of the Vic, and even with a massive trunk it was still a puzzle at times. Forester, chuck it in the back and be off, even with the cooler that carries my VEDC in the back. So SUV or hatchback at a minimum.

Why not a Prius? They're weird. Driven two or three of different generations and just can't stand their quirkiness.

If anyone has any other contenders that are hatchback or SUV, under $8,000, and get better than 25 MPG in the city, I'd love to hear them.

One of the key issues with a used Hybrid is that the battery condition dictates the value. The batteries have a finite life and their condition my not be diagnosed accurately by most shops. YMmv.

You may want to go look for a used VW diesel Jetta wagon. It is not quite as large as the Escape but it may be an alternative.

Escape hybrids are amazing. Similar system to the Prius. Batteries are generally far exceeding expected life spans. NY taxi escape hybrids are getting like 400k miles before major repairs.

Skip the 2008 model years. They are the same under the body as the gen 1 models. They only updated the body panels.

2009 is when you get the full mechanical/drivetrain upgrade, from what I remember

Now this is something I didn't know! Appears your memory is correct though.

Hey Dogan. I just upgraded rides. I haven't had any problems or malfs so far, but I do agree with the advice that I was given about staying away from everything with a CVT.

Anyone know a hybrid that does not use a CVT?

I generally hate CVTs, but on a hybrid system, they seem to be an ok option.
