On my first and only true singletrack ride the squeeze bulb vibrated loose and is somewhere in eastern Utah :(
I now have to blow through it to signal my displeasure with motorists or pedestrians.

I think in general terms that form factor would be pretty awful; huge wind profile, very wide for trail clearance and I assume heavy for the volume. I can't imagine many situation where it would be preferable to a large tent carried on a small, single wheel trailer.

I've seen that video, and it is fascinating, as are a number of projects on YT dealing with coroplast shelters. Many aimed at helping the homeless. Putting one on wheels is an interesting concept but I have to agree with RonnyRonin; it's just not practical. A packed, lightweight tent or tarp is a much better match to a bicycle's limited towing capacity in a bug out situation.

I didn't vote. I have a mountain bike but I never really considered it for my transportation/transport if I were to have to leave here in a hurry with no certainty of returning. I am going to think about it now. What an f-n innovative and informative post. Well done.

I worked at a wholesale nursery that packed plants onto multishelf metal racks to load onto trucks for delivery, easily several hundred pounds apiece. We usually used 3-wheeled electric carts to tow them around but the owner's son got the bright idea to try and gear a trike low enough for towing. I think he broke 2 or 3 hubs before he gave up and turned it into a single speed, but long story short I have some idea of how low you have to gear a bike to do that and it makes my legs hurt just thinking about it. Spin baby spin!

The original shot (B&W) - was done as a publicly shot for the then new Airstream - so well balanced, they could be towed with a bicycle.

There are a number of blogs with folks who are currently traveling cross country with trailers in tow.

You definitely want disc brakes for your bike! Stopping is not a problem for disc brakes which are common and cheap now.

I always heard that when braking on downhill descents, the trailer should be slowing the tow vehicle, not the other way around.

Okay, I didn't think anyone would be crazy enough to even consider towing an Airstream trailer for anything other than a stunt on level ground. I thought you were referring to the ones in this size range

What is 'worse - a massively overloaded cargo bike or pulling a trailer? Only your knees can say...

I lived in Las Vegas for over a decade - we would go out by Searchlight - then up into the hills to go rock climbing. We would see the classic "desert cruiser" coming down the back roads in the evening, a grossly over loaded cargo bike - panniers front and rear, like the guy in the next to last pic, PLUS pulling a BOB or YAK behind.

Semi-necro for some updates:

I took the bike on a few more shake-down cruises before I moved a few months ago, and tried out some slightly different set-ups:

on a whim I shoved an old lumbar back in the loop on my Jones bar, made a handy stash spot and beverage holder.

The main difference with this setup is I tried lashing the pad and tent to the front rack rather then my handlebars. Very little difference in handling but left far more clearance for my brakes and shifters, so this will likely be my go-too in the future.

This trip was about half paved and half hilly gravel roads. The payload was very similar to what I would carry in a backpack, and while the numbers aren't impressive they are still better then double the moving average of what I can manage on foot:

(since you can't actually read it, it says a milage of 21.4, max speed of 21.6 and a moving average of 8.1mph.)

This time I rode only with a small lumbar pack and a HPG kit bag, unsurprisingly far more comfortable then a pack or plate carrier.

Since moving I haven't got out much, but I do still commute 4 days a week on my bike. With increased snowfall on this side of the rockies I've had to deal with some challenges and am seriously considering goretex coveralls.

I have had to take my bike into the mechanic for hub problems a third time, one theory is the oil in my hub might not work right in any temps below 20*F, worrying but I'm not quite ready to give up on it.

I have also purchased a fat bike fork and wheel set that I can put on my bike if I so choose to at least give me some cushion and traction on the front end, but I'm not sure how much that would gain me at this point.

The tagalong trailer project is on the back burner, mainly because I can't find my spare cargo racks but I am hopeful I can answer that question one way or another soon.

I have an older Trek MTB I electrified at the end of 2016. Put 18 hundred miles on it commuting and getting groceries, and blasting through canyons. I love it. Love is not a strong enough word.

Motor is a Bafang BBS 02 750 watt @48vdc. I run a 52 volt battery pack though. I have a real world ranfge under battery of 23 miles with a decent load on the bike. I have had it up to 41mph but cruise on the street at 12-15 mph while peddling using "50%" power settings. These Bafangs cannot be beat fort the price. This thing will climb in the dirt like a billy goat too.
