Well. We are about a month out. Despite our best efforts and setbacks we are still in it and looking like we make a real go of it. We have lost our ground crew which means we can't expect any resupply along the route on our terms and will have to make due with what we have. We look forward to getting to St Charles in our little canoe. We had a brutal day on the Missouri training where 22+ mph winds spun us around and tossed us something terrible. We had to bailout short on our journey and took longer than expected due to having to stay out of the channel to hide from the wind. We made 15 miles in 3 hours which is terrible, but we made it in terrible conditions.

Thanks for the update.

I would have taken one look at the weather and turned around. Really looking forward to the race photos.

We have now trimmed the canoe; this has made a world of difference and managed to do it without adding 130lbs to the nose. We are now just a few weeks away and we are down to the nitty gritty.
We are getting our heads in the game and are really feeling the pregame nerves as the size of the undertaking really sets in. I told my wife that everyone says that once you reach Glasgow you are fine and the odds of finishing go way up.

Weather looks amazing. Heat isn't going to be a problem, rain chances are diminishing, we might actually make it.

Due to lack of a physical ground crew and so therefore a metric ton of supplies in our canoe we had to drop out of the race because we could not carry our boar by ourselves. This has been a crushing blow and everyone enfolded is pretty bummed right now. Instead we are going to go support some other orphan paddlers.

So sorry to hear that. I've really enjoyed reading your updates, even if I haven't responded previously. Are there any other races you could participate in? Is next year a possibility?

Good news. We went to the race anyway to volunteer to help other racers. After 4 days of working in waste deep Missouri River water and hefting hundreds of boats up and down the boat ramps we are going to attempt it in 2018. We have seen the race up close and know what we need to do to better prepare for it. To answer your other question; yes, we are going to do several of the smaller races over the year to prepare. I'll keep the updates coming.

Here is a video of the race I made. It wasn't the story I was looking to tell, but it was the story that happened.

Before we hit the water in our next training race "The Dispatch" we took time to watch the eclipse.
