Honest, I did a search, surplus HMMWV's and street legalnes

Post by chills1994 » Fri Oct 07, 2016 2:38 pm

It seems to me that the process to make one of these .gov surplus HMMWV's street legal and have a title is not so cut and dried.

Has anyone here successfully done it?

It also seems that THEE one source for information/gouge/intell on surplus vehicles, steelsoldiers, poo poos threads such as this.

Maybe there are some state DMV's that are more lenient about actually issuing a title (even though I think the govliquidation website says "off road use only")

What say you?

A quick search turned up:
This story has someone in Texas who did it.

If you live in AZ and CA you will not be so lucky.
Of course this will vary by state (Arizona will not tag any humvee. It is VERY difficult in California to pass emissions, etc).”
This guy does it as a business ... in Texas.

Sounds like the answer may be to get it street legal in TX, register it to a TX LLC which has a legal domicile in TX to legally keep the registration in TX and then drive it with TX plates into your state.

The easiest way is to have a farm. I know of at least one farmer that farm plated one recently in Oregon, so only street legal for 1-200ish miles around your farm.

for mere mortals I think it is pretty tricky, I have some friends navigating the process and hoping my brother keeps me up to date. If it works my brother will probably be trying it.

The prices I see them going for at auctions make my eyes water.
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberèd—
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother

These guys convert HMMWV's and other military vehicles to street legalness with the following disclaimer: Some areas such as Denver, CO are not able to register some models or yrs of Humvees. Please Call and verify your area before purchase
The difference between common-sense and paranoia is that common-sense is thinking everyone is out to get you. That's normal -- they are. Paranoia is thinking that they're conspiring.
