Problem: Rear Doors Won't Open

Post by whisk.e.rebellion » Tue Jul 01, 2014 2:27 pm

I recently came into possession of a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder (V6, 5spd Manual, ZS Fleet Number 0503) that has a few quirks. One issue is that neither of the rear doors will open (the rear hatch and front doors open just fine). This vehicle does not have power locks.

I was able to pop some of the door panel off of the rear driver door. After playing with it for an hour, I'm 99% sure that the door won't open because the lock is stuck in the engaged position.

There are two rods I can see/reach. One is attached to the interior door handle and moves freely. The other is attached to the interior lock switch and moves freely, but isn't attached to anything at the other end.

Peeking in a hole in the door frame, I can see a big plastic assembly that the door lock rod should probably attach to, but I'm willing to bet the attachment point is plastic and broke off long ago.

Is there any way I can force the door to open/unlock so that I can get the entire interior panel off and try to reattach the door lock rod or replace the broken assembly?

Did a quick search and this seems to be a very common problem. A couple of folks insist that you can get the interior panel off with the door closed, it's just a giant pita. If you can't jimmy it to work without removing the interior panel, I suggest you put ear muffs on the kids and get to fighting the interior panel as is.

Have you tried unlocking it with the key?

Plan A;Try grabbing the rod that goes to the inside handle with a needle nose vise grip.Spray a lubricant on the locking mechanism .Stay as perpendicular as possible. If possible go to a junkyard and find a similar model and see how everything works.
Plan B; Call a lock smith and ask advice or have them come and open the doors.
Best of luck!!!

Great engineering achievement.

Look up recalls.

If its on the list then the dealer is a great option.

Had an 87 or so, only two doors, but I know the seats flipped up and such. Any way yours do that to give you more capability to get the door panel further off?

Great engineering achievement.

That's hardly something new - been that way since the 50's.

its going to be stupid to ask, is there anyway to reach your hand in and manually unlock the mechanism? I know you said a piece might be broken off, but if you go buy a new lock mechanism, you will see how it is supposed to look and operate, and it might help you figure out how to do it.

Perhaps you could go to a wrecking yard & look for a similar model & see how it works and maybe get parts?

good call... or maybe a chilton or haynes manual might help you out with getting the panel off or seeing the part

You've probably already seen this or maybe you've fixed it already.
It might be helpful if you have not.

When I see the thread title from time to time I think "fiber will hook him right up".

For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
