New BOV In Sullivan County, NY

Post by GhostMedic » Wed May 07, 2014 8:43 am

So I just got myself a "new" bug out vehicle. It's in the beginning process of being brought up to snuff.

1965 Jeep Gladiator "Old Red"
She's running a 232 cu.in. I-6, 3-on-the-tree, Dana 44 front and rear w/ 4.08 gears.

Junkyard proved helpful w/ new bed floor (1/8" diamond plate steel) with a roll bar already mounted. And a new fuel cell for her (1998 Dodge Ram 1500 35-Gallon poly tank)(Jeep in pic is my buddies J10)

And here a vid of me driving her (Almost got her stuck in the water but she pulled right out in 1st after I stalled her out  )

That's awesome! I'll definitely be following this thread. Love stuff like this.
"But Lord, during the hardest trials of my life, why was there only one set of footprints?"
"Because," said the Lord, "Sandpeople always ride single-file, to hide their numbers."

Look for updates Friday night or Saturday morning. Throwing three hard days of work at her and hoping me and my buddy can get her to pass NY Inspection. Will post lots of pics and maybe some vids for y'all to droll over.

I have been combing the internet in envy looking to find one for sale. These and the old Willys Overland pickups were a big part of my childhood when I visited my grandparents in Honduras.

I might buy one as a Toy if I get a new job in Oregon.

I know that site well, but with four kids and a wife I need a six or seven seat BOV. Probably a Mitsubishi Montero or a massive Ford Expedition or Chevy Suburban.

So got a good deal accomplished with Old Red in three days. Wanted to get more done but ran into some wiring SNAFUs and than it rained the last day I was working on her. Here are some updated pics.

Cleaned off the washer fluid bag
Image

Got the new bed floor in place (Still need to weld it in)
Image

Uncovered the Paint and Trim code. Paint comes back to Presidential Red.
Image

Got the "new" tail-lights wired up and working.
Image

New fender mocked up after lots of cutting with an angle grinder to get the old one off (Looked like the PO welded the nuts on the original mount bolts)
Image

Image

Also picked up a Tach and some floor mats on sale from Advance Auto Parts

Than we got adventurous and took out the gauge cluster to see if the bulbs were shot in them (they aren't) and to see if we could figure out why the turn signal indicators aren't working on it.

Image

Image

And than found this under the hood. Not sure if the PO converted to one-wire alternator and just said screw these wires or what was going on.

Nice! I gave away a '67 longbed Fleetside with the Vigilante 327 in it in 2010. It had major rust, but was otherwise an ok truck.

So progress has stalled out on my project due to a lot of other stuff being on my plate. Gonna be working on her for 20 days straight next month. I will be posting pics up every day with the progress and will hopefully be bringing her home the very beginning of September. I have been buying more things for her on ebay and realizing that JEEP really does stand for Just Empty Every Pocket.

Progress has restarted on Old Red. Found out what the bulge in my headliner was, a massive mouse nest. This also solved the question of where some of the cushioning from my seat went. Good news is the headliner came put in one piece so now I can make a pattern for a new one. :D

Found out I need a headlight switch and a floor dimmer switch. Kinda figuring out that mud wasps seem to love Jeeps too been finding empty nests everywhere. lol.

I promise I will update with pics as I get picture worthy progress complete.

Well in between the rain drizzles I got the bench seat pulled out, got tires of having to be a contortionist to do anything with the wiring.
Image

Seems like the only original from the factory floor is the transmission tunnel. Everything else seems to be patched together pieces of sheet metal from the PO
Image

One odd thing I noticed was the ash tray on the back of the seat.
Image

Also found these metal tags on the underside of the seat
Image

small one is stamped SG 12-6
Image

Big one is stamped SG 956383-D
Image

This also fell out when I was moving the seat. Any ideas as to what it is or where it goes?
Image

The seat was recovered somewhere in it's past. And the person who did it cut slits for the seat belts to pass through.
Image

And evidently they used burlap as a cover.
Image

And a question from the other day when I removed the headliner. Why didn't they paint under the headliner?
