If you're using the subsilver2 (default) or prosilver theme, you may have noticed a new thumbs up button and some new fields on posts and profiles. We've implemented a "thanks" system where users can thank other users for their posts.

It's kind of like a positive reinforcement karma system. Hopefully, it'll help to give some recognition to our good posters and encourage others to make quality posts.

For obvious reasons, it's not possible to "thank" posts in Announcements, Thread Graveyard or Off-topic.

Great to hear! I have been thinking such a system would be a great addition.

I must not be using one of the mentioned themes, as I don't seem to have any thumbs up button, but I"ll keep an eye out in case it pops up eventually.

I see up by the User Control Panel a Thanks Toplist and a Thanks list. Happy to see that!

Those are the only two themes really supported by anyone making plugins anymore.

You are using subsilver2, which is the default theme, so you should be seeing the yellow thumbs up on the bottom right corner of each posts. Well, you won't in this thread, but any thread not in the above mentioned forums should show the buttons.

I see it says who was thanked but it doesn't say by whom. Does that get recorded anywhere? :?:

Never mind, it does. Just click on the number and it takes you to the thanked post.

Next week, I'll solve poverty. Next week though....

I like!

But my 'New posts' link went away from the board index. :?: Are these things related?

Bah, call me grumpy, but I tend to dislike features like this as they tend to devolve into popularity contests.

Also, I see that a thread on the 020 forum is now labeled with "Rating:14.29%" which implies that the thread is considered unfavorable.

thumbs down.

Shouldn't be. I still have "new posts."

Okay, Grumpy :awesome:

This is precisely why we didn't go with the "karma" mod which allows people to upvote and downvote posts. We felt that would be more open to dogpiling and the like.

The rating doesn't imply that a post/thread is "unfavorable," but I can see how that can be inferred. The idea is that /quality/ posts will get upvoted and chit chatty or moronic stuff won't.

This may or may not be a permanent change. I'm going to evaluate things in a while and see what, if any, effect this is having.

I personally like the feature. I've seen it used on other forums, and it adds a level of courtesy. I agree that having 'neg rep' invites trouble, but being able to click a button to let another poster know you value their input is a win-win.

What I am seeing so far is if two separate people hit "thanks," the post goes to 100%. All the....10 stars? Not sure what else happens, or if we need any more than 2 "thanks" to fully rate a post.

Not saying good or bad. Just taking notes. Seeing if this is how it was intended to work.

EDIT: Seems to have changed. Cool deal!

I'm not sure I like this personally. If it didn't count on our profiles and stuff it would be cool. I like the "thanks toplist" but I wish it were for posts, not people.

I suppose it's something new and I don't really like it but will get used to it. If it were more of a Facebook like and it wasn't scored and you could view the most well reviewed posts. That would be better IMHO.

My theme does not support this. It is a good idea, but I probably won't Participate.

Yes I wish this had been available for more themes. I really don't like the white glare of the two themes this is available for and don't see switching to them anytime soon. I guess if I really like a post enough, I will switch to a thanks supported theme to do a thanks then switch back to my usual theme. But considering how much effort that is, it means I will likely not be giving many thanks.

I noticed a blatant spam, and accidentally hit the "thanks" icon instead of the "report" icon. :(
We need a way to revert accidental "thanks".

It would be nice if you rethought all the clutter of icons which "thanks" is part of.
Personally, I'd keep the spam/social-media icons small (or kill 'em!), and drastically increase the size of the "thanks" and "report" icons.

How about a heart for "thanks"?
At the very least, a color change would make it clearer.

Yup, still feeling stupid about the accidental click.
At least one other forum dweller has "thanked" a scammer, so at least I'm not alone.

And since it doesn't work here... a typed "Thanks!" to all who maintain these forums! :)

There's a way to unthank. The "thumbs up" becomes a "thumbs down" after you thank a post.

I'll take any and all feedback about the looks of things.

And, you're welcome :)

Oh.Grandpa.

Yeah, it works (even with active scripting and other cyberzombie crud "off").
Bonus: it asks you to confirm. Good UI. :)

Thanks whisk.e!
Had to go to the 2nd page of your old posts to find one that would let me post a "thanks" (conveniently, it was also an inherently thank worthy one).

Tip:
We can "thanks" old posts, too.

For example, here's the list somebody put together of Woods Walker's perfect-o-mundo threads:
http://www.zombiehunters.org/forum/view ... sc&start=0
I just hit "Thanks" on a 2006 posting. Let's crank up Da Man's rating. ;)

I'm also thinking some of Mags' great cooking threads should rank higher, for example, lots of bacon goodness here:
http://www.zombiehunters.org/forum/view ... 0&t=104784
And there's all manner of more "serious" food goodness posts I've benefited from by duodecima, Towanda, ZombieGranny (listed in alphabetical order). :)

Yo' what happened to the ability to 'thank' in off topic and fiction? I like to thank the writers, encourages them.

If you look at the Thanks Toplist, three out of the top five thanked posts are in Fiction, and four out of the top five topics are. The one remaining post is the ZS045 chat thread. While encouraging writers is good, you can just as easily do that with a post, and it doesn't drown out posts that are more in keeping with the whole preparedness thing that we're trying to promote. Part of the point of thanks was to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, and it's harder to see good, prep-related posts when everything is in Fiction. You'll just have to show your appreciation the old-fashioned way- by posting in a story and saying that you liked it.

has something happened with the thanks system? I haven't seen the thanks button the last few days.
