KnightoftheRoc wrote: "Radiation" is a misnomer. It's not a thing, it's an action. Radiation is the projection of highly charged particles away from the originating source. Some highly charged particles act like waves, some act like particles- light is a great example of a form of radiated energy that displays aspects of both particles and waves- enough so that Science has not yet firmly nailed down exactly which column to list photons, particles or waves. Microwaves are NOT "radio waves", they are a higher section of the EM spectrum, and we sometimes use them to carry signals, like cell phones and wifi. The difference there is in the intensity of the signal strength, as opposed to a microwave oven. Both cell phones and microwave ovens use frequencies in the microwaves range of the spectrum, but the signals emitted differ greatly in amplitude, or strength. A comparison between them could be likened to an old train set transformer, and the wall outlet powering it- both use 60Hz AC voltage, but the outlet provides much more than the transformer. Radio waves cover the EM spectrum from the Khz (thousands) to the Mhz(millions) frequencies, inclusively, microwaves are in the Ghz (billions) frequencies.
Ionizing radiation IS a specific thing, and radio and microwaves dont do it.

Sorry about your pal's brain tumor, but the plural of anecdote is not data.

And no, I'm not going to get into a fight with you about milliwatt EM being dangerous.

I bought the potassium iodate pills, know that they aren't a cure all as others have mentioned BUT worth having 'em in a home first aid kit.

Iodine 131 is a beta emitter with a half-life of 8 days. So you need enough KI to saturate your thyroid for this period. You have to inhale or ingest the fallout that has the radioactive element for it to be dangerous. Since nuclear warheads have far more radioactive isotopes (Plutonium, etc) that can poison you from a distance (like standing outside in an ashfall), KI is probably of low importance if you don't have a bunker with filtered air to live in.

Some years back I built a recording studio that turned out to be a darn good fallout shelter. It had a silenced air purification system, and one end of it was built right into a bedrock outcrop (was an illegal still back during prohibition). The whole framed part - walls, floors ceiling - were lined with lead sheeting, plus the floors were suspended on a bed of sand. You could have probably put a neutrino detector in there... but alas, no potassium iodide pills. And no nuclear attack during that era. :(

Yeah, so along with my post in the North Korea Saber Missile Nuke Explosion Death thread I think this ten year old thread has a couple of good things to say about how potassium iodide can, and can't, help.

Yes ZS has many such gems in the forum. That is why we try to keep this place on the rails.

If you are interested in other radiation preparations here are some links with good data:

What would it take, in U$D, to bring the infrastructure back up to spec?

There's effort already, though I dunno the specifics. I believe NT2C posted some info about it immediately after the last outage.

Yes, since Houston is a likely target but I'm far enough out not to get killed in the initial blast. KI pills seem like a cheap insurance against the threat of radioactive iodine in the fallout. Of course, other protections against other radiation sources are also necessary.

Yes, My country (Belgium) isn't that big, and the nuclear plants aren't that safe. So it's smart to have them and they are free :?
