Midland Micromobile....Thoughts?

Post by Dooms » Mon Mar 27, 2017 7:51 pm

https://midlandusa.com/micromobile/

Saw one of these the other day and it piqued my interest. Traditionally I've always had a CB in my vehicles and one in the house as a "just in case of emergencies" communications method (in case phones go down again like during 9/11 mostly) With my newer vehicles I've ditched the mobile CBs for handhelds, just because it was easier than doing all the mounting and such on newer vehicles. That being said, handheld CBs leave a lot to be desired.

These look compact, being FM you don't need a huge antenna to get reasonably good range and voice quality, the higher end models have repeater capability, and the most interesting part for me is that...being GMRS.....they can communicate with all those blister pack combination FRS/GMRS radios out there. That really opens the potential emergency communications network (chatter too, but I'm used to that on the CB)

Obviously it's not going to be the equal of Ham radio, but for local communications it seems like a good option as a CB replacement. The downside is that there's a licence requirement, but one license covers my entire family and there's no test to take, which is manageable to me.

That being said, I'm not exactly a specialist in Communications here, so if you guys have other thoughts I'm all ears.

GRMS/FRS are UHF freq radio, and rely on line-of-sight to communicate. The fact it's pumping 40 watts will help, but your still line of sight.
Cant find a decent graphic, so I'll try in text:

User 1 / Mountain top A <-50miles-> User 2 / Mountain top B = No issues, Good Comms

User 1 <--Mountain A--> User 2 = No comms without a repeater on top.

It doesn't have to be a mountain, could be a city, a densely wooded forest, etc. in simple terms (Not going into knife-edging and Fresnel) because it works on line of sight, the more in between you and the other party - the less chance to communicate. Good use, if you're keeping it around on the farm or the local neighborhood, not for real distance unless you live somewhere like Montana.

GRMS - Local comms, 1 License required

CB would give you more range and no license for any party.

Ham would give even more range depending on level, but would require everyone to be licensed in this situation.
