We had the vet out again today but they managed to avoid a c-section and mother and lamb are both fine. Prior to this elsewhere he had to do a c-section on a Pygmy Goat which had bleated during the entire procedure even though it had local anaesthetic :oh:
Poor wee thing, poor vet too

Update: as of now 25 ewes left to lamb and another two are in the early stages of labour.
I'm just in from a c-section, I had the job of holding the ewe to stop her escaping...after awhile I could feel my legs getting wet so I looked down to see if she was dribbling on me, instead of drool I saw blood
Both are ok, the ewe is a bit shell shocked and hasn't licked it or bleated but she's not aggressive towards it either so I'm hoping they'll bond as normal.
I have 6 pet lambs this year which are each still on their mothers, each mother either has only one working side to her udder and/or not enough milk. So these ewes will all be going once their lambs are weaned, we need to cull the problematic ewes and bring on new stock.
We have some good lambs this year and I am excited about how they will progress :)

We are down to 20 ewes now but they are going to be straggling through to the end of March. Only one lambing pen is needed now, before there were 3. We also put new mothers and lambs into mixed lots today and merged the lots of oldest lambs into larger groups. I feel like we are starting to see the light at the end of this years (lambing) tunnel :D

Now only 7 ewes left to lamb, the next one is due imminently and she's having triplets. We have two foster ewes who both had dead lambs so the plan is to rear each triplet as a single...that's the plan anyway.
We got our vets bill for the month of February, it's was £1,240 :gonk:
Let's hope we have a good year for selling Rams :oh:

You're in the home stretch! Yay!

We just got a hide back from processing. It looks lovely. Soft leather on the inside, and about a 3" machine washable fleece still attached on the outside. It's about time that annoying ewe was useful for something!

Let's see if this works...

Click for image because ZS wouldn't let me post an image larger than 850 pixels.

And the image got turned a weird way due to my phone, so the lines are wonky, but each tile is 12 inches square. I did the skinning myself, and the rest of her is currently in our freezer. Tasty for a 4-5 year old ewe!

The Sheep Farming Thread

Post by wee drop o' bush » Mon Dec 28, 2015 10:27 am

And it begins again for another year
Our first batch of ewes to lamb are due at the end of January, they weren't meant to be brought into the lambing shed till mid January but the weather has been so awful that our fields are sodden and light of grass.
We got the lambing shed prepared this morning, brought the ewes in, dosed them for liver fluke then put them into each bay. They'll be nice and cosy from now on.
Image
I haven't worked with the sheep since I broke my leg in May, so lambing may be a bit of a trial. Since lambing in Spring 2015 I've broken my leg, my husband has broken his ankle, my mother-in-law and the man who helps out have had hip replacements and my father-in-law has a bad back :oh:

It is, thanks :)
My leg is not what it was before I broke it, but it works and I don't need crutches any more, despite mr wee drop saying I walk like Quasimodo (charming) I'm not expecting there to be any real difference between what I can do during lambing last year & this year.
We sold some in lamb Texel gimmers today at an average of 445gn, not as good an average as we had hoped for but not a disaster either. Prices have been depressed for the past 12 months and breeders just aren't able to spend as much when they aren't getting good prices either.

]

We are going to cut down in our pedigree flock and farm more cross bred ewes that are more prolific breeders and require less babying. We could put 3 commercial cross bred ewes in a patch of field for every 2 Texels or Rouge in the same space.

Sadly one of the twin lambs died today. We also have a gravely ill pregnant ewe who's due today. She has what looks like a rectal & colon prolapse. Here's the photo of the poor thing (NSFW) Image
The ewe is due today, our vet gave her an epidural and induced her labour with an injection of oxytocin. He suspects that the lambs are dead inside her and gives herself about a 40% chance of survival. She is only a gimmer but she had liver fluke a few months ago and that seems to have weakened her badly.
I just wish she would lamb, though I suspect she might die before or during :(

Update: she died 30 minutes ago, and we cut her lambs out. The 3 lambs were dead too. What a sorry sight that was :(
The smell when she was opened up was something awful.
I'm very glad the ewe has died because I hated that she was suffering and the vet surgeon we called this morning didn't want to euthanise her because she was pregnant. We were about to put her out of her misery ourselves. I felt so useless, we've no firearms and nothing sharper than a hoof knife to do it with :(
The twin of the lamb that died is dying too, we suspect that the mothers milk is poisoning her lambs.
Also we lambed another ewe carrying triplets, her first lamb was born breech, dead and slightly rotten :gonk:
Thankfully her other two lambs seem OK :)

I'm not sure, my best guess is that the ewe has had mastitis and the milk is prurient. Newborn lambs are so good at dying anyway, it takes very little :|
