Update:
Our in-lamb Gimmer sale went pretty well and we sold 10 gimmers at an average of 600gn each, our top price was 1400gn which was down on last years 2200gn but then our lower prices were better than last year so it evens out :)

Lambing is now almost under way, as in imminently :ohdear:
One ewe is due today and another tomorrow, I cannot wait to hear the first lambs bleating. My dog died just days before Christmas and I'm at a loose end and miserable without her so lambing is much needed to keep me ticking over.
The lambing feed is switched on again and so we get to hear sheep coughing, farting, scratching and generally fidgeting all through the night :gonk:
Last summer Mr wee drop knocked down the concrete walls in the old pig styes and replaced them with this system of hurdles secured to the wall with metal pins.Image
Instead of 4 individual pens for new lambed ewes we now have 9, if it works well we will do the same with the other pig stye across the yard.
Now I just have to wait... :clownshoes:

Your new post-natal ward looks good, all it needs now is some residents! I'm sure it'll soon be packed with newborns and you'll have moved on from wishing lambing would start to wishing it would finish

Have you had much trouble with snow in your area? There's been none at all here, much to the disappointment of all the kids with sledges (but to everyone else's relief).

We have had quite a lot of snow, but it's melted now thankfully. Our ewes due in March are still outside in the fields so if the snow had continued we would have had to either feed them silage twice a day or bring them inside which would have been a bit of a squeeze. We need all the space we have for the ones already in.

That looks like a pretty impressive setup.

This year the Rams were taken off the ewes earlier than usual, so lambing will be finished by March 31st. Which is so much better than last year when we had our last ewe lamb on May 1st (not counting old Jane who lambed on June 22nd) :oh:
Any ewes not in lamb were blood tested to see why they failed to conceive and we are waiting on the results, if they are deficient in any nutrients we can dose them to try to rectify this. Ewes that conceived last year but not this year were given a chance but ewes that were empty two years in a row were sent to the abattoir.

Smart. It makes lambing more productive and easier if you have good ewes. No sense in keeping extra mouths to feed.

I put one of our ewes in the freezer a few weeks ago. She was a bit of an asshole, and a crossbreed, so not good for wool (mainly why we have our very small flock). Even though she's 4-5 years old, she's still tasty and very mild!

Here is the ram lamb, born 3 hours ago :v:

He is nicely shaped with good dark eyes and a strong muzzle with a black nose, mr wee drop is excited about his potential :D

The ewes so far are all going past their due date this year, they must be in good health. We have had two ewes lamb this morning, it's going to get really busy over the next fortnight.

Update: 12 ewes have lambed now. I am so tired this morning. Three ewes lambed through the night so I was in and out of my cosy bed like a yo-yo. Then it got really interesting when the power went off mid lambing; the snow was blowing in through the shed door, I was struggling to hold a sheep who hadn't lambed before and was frankly not impressed with the whole giving birth thing & mr wee drop had his arm lodged up to his elbow when suddenly we were plunged into total darkness. Thankfully the ewe lambed ok, her twins were ok and the lights came back on for lambing the next two ewes.

We have head torches too, that's a good idea
I'll keep a head torch in my coat pocket for just these circumstances. Our power supply is prone to breaks. There are two gimmers in the early stages so I suspect it'll be another busy night. We are not quite at the mental stage of lambing yet but that's fast approaching.

The Sheep Farming Thread

Post by wee drop o' bush » Wed Feb 04, 2015 2:50 pm

Update, yesterday/today was crazy busy with two C-sections and lots of normal deliveries. I've lost count and am nearly dead on my feet with tiredness Image
One of the c-sections was of a 9kg ram lamb. He's half rared already
Image
She's a very good mother despite her c-section, the other c-section ewe not so much, so she's in a crate.

Another c-section due to a small ewe (Tinkerbell) with a big lamb. She and the lamb are both ok (knock on wood) and Tinks is a great mother :D

Glad to know it's going well so far :D

OT, I'm reminded that historical survival rates for human c-sections were low (less than 20%) before the late 1800s. I doubt you've got an operating theatre on your farm (go on, surprise me  ) so could you elaborate on your procedure when you get a free hour?

You never know, come the ZPAW we may all have animal husbandry to practice!

We have had another c-section since I wrote that, 4 in approx 36 hours.
No we don't have an operating theatre but I was thinking today that we really should
What we use instead is a wooden board set on straw bales. The vet brings the surgical implements/supplies to the farm, these are already sterilised and stored in containers. We provide buckets of hot water and they do the rest.
Once we have the ewe on the wooden board the vet uses clippers to shave the fleece off her side, they wash the area with surgical soap then inject the area with local anaesthetic, cut through to the uterus and incise it to remove the lamb(s) Then the vet stitches the incision closed and injects the ewe with 72 hour pain relief and antibiotics. Occasionally like today I'll be asked to help such as holding the uterus so the vet can easily stitch it or holding in intestines if the ewe is contracting hard and pushing them out through the incision :awesome:
It's not exactly sterile conditions but there's rarely any bother afterwards, we will inject the ewes for 4 days with antibiotics.

I'd love to but I'd have to ask the vet permission and I'm not sure whether they'd be ok with that. Also I'm usually occupied some way during the surgery, but I do want to film and take photos of a c-section so someday when the time is right I will do :)
