How Have You Prepared Today? (Bug-in Location Edition)

Post by Takaaco78 » Fri Mar 11, 2011 9:45 pm

We have "What have you bought (firearms edition)" and a What have to bought (Bug-out edition).
This thread is for how you have prepared your homestead or bug-in location

Today I bought a four month old Angus steer for meat (will be ready for the freezer next summer.

Also picked up a really kick ass book called "The Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live It"

that book looks awesome, how do you like it so far? I'll have to put it on my wish list..

It's been really weird going for me, more so a little overwhelming or having to prioritize because there is just so much to learn and do and I'm still new with all of this stuff.. My first interest and priority is in minimalist/primitive wilderness survival because I feel its a good base of which to approach self-sustainability in respect to living with the earth.. I got a few field guides and disaster prep books.. as I gain the ability for myself I'd love to start the bug in sort of stuff.. the only thing I have going for me at the moment is crafting and studing my ass off.. I need to get to the point where I can start applying learned skills.. I feel that this spring and summer might be a big starting point for me with that.. as I'm learning its almost like its busting out of me.. because the Philosophy has always been in me, now I am just learning the means at which to apply it.. its awesome stuff.. I like these what have you done threads helps give awesome ideas and holds one accountable.. I will try more and more to have something new to add to these threads.. thanks for making this one..

I love the idea for this thread. I hope it takes off.

I cleaned my apartment. This freed up more space for food and fuel storage. Lots of junk was tossed out.

I hope the thread takes off also , but it may not because there are a lot of people who like to keep their preps private for fear of being raided if the SHTF. If thats true the guys on the firearms threads are gonna be screwed

I'm working on converting my room into a study (Dedicated to the study of self sufficiency, preparedness, and survival at the moment, I also have a ton of religion and philosophy stuff) just want to make it more organized and efficient.. possibly make it also a place where i could try to learn the beginnings of certain skills, for example I'd like to have some mini container gardens and terrariums in my room..

right now my room is a hell hole, but its getting better..

I actually did this the other day, but I am putting it up anyway because I am excited about it.
I purchased 6 chicks and am beginning construction of their chicken coop.

I don't know how many jokes I told about having 6 hot chicks in my house.

Have a spare room so today I put up shelving and organized the food, first-aid, ammo etc. that I do have. As the weather warms we are planning a garden and a class on canning. Slowly but surely we'll get there. It just seems like so much when you see an empty room in your eyes and the completed room in your mind.

I finished cleaning my room (to use it more as a study) and I started an herb container garden to test my gardening skills and to slowly learn by experience..

In the past week we:

Got the seeds out, checked what we want to plant, bought some more at Home Depot

Finished assembling all but one of the wire shelves in the storage area in the basement and got a chunk of the workshop area cleaned up.

Procrastinated cleaning some precision machined steel for the second weekend in a row.

Put together an over the toilet shelving unit.

Mucked out the pond and moved all of the leaves to where the second tier of the herb garden will be going.

Figured out how many more landscaping timbers we need to add another layer to all the raised beds (20).

Unboxed the new brush cutter.

Noticed carpenter bees. Need to make those carpenter bee traps and get a bait board up on the roof (board with tuna in the center, liberally dosed with pyretherin derivative).

Examined the boards I have to make 2 more bookshelves (8'x4')... Noted they're 2 inches wider than the two existing bookshelves. Wife said, build em anyway, extra depth is good. That'll free up more floorspace in the basement as well.

Let the new laying hens outside for their first time...they we're very happy. Moved the goats out on pasture. Restrung some fence pulled down by a flood last May. Recovered shitake mushroom logs I thought were washed away by said flood. Of the 100 4-foot logs I managed to find 40...all sprouting mushrooms. Managed to get one of three pigs onto her summer pasture, the other two aren't hungry enough to climb into the trailer.
Mrs. KYZhunters put out collards, spinach, chard and radishes and built cattle-panel A-frames for beans.
Happy to be at work so I can get some rest.

Edit: One of y'all said, "Pictures or it didn't happen," so here's a pile of logs inoculated with shitake spores. Once they're soaked you stack them up 'Lincoln Log' style so it's easier to harvest the 'shrooms.

And here's one of the little buggers sprouting out of the log.

Well we lost the cow last weekend. We blew over $100 in medications to try and save it. We contacted the guy we got him from and he told us "he has pnumonia and we had been doctoring him for a week before you bought him". We asked him about replacment or a refund since he knowingly sold us a sick calf. He basicly said o well sorry about you luck thanks for the $$ and hung-up. So noboy buy anything from this guy in Somerset KY. Gary and Scott Gibson 606-416-9936 (he sells on Craigslist (chickens, goats, ducks, turkeys, and cows)).
