Faraday cage contruction?

Post by Flying Lead » Sun Dec 03, 2017 10:47 pm

Is it possible to build for a reasonable amount, a Faraday cage to shield something small like a generator or ATV?
Would it stop the damage from an EMP? Will a ship type container work?

I'm not an expert, but if you can seal the gaps in the doorway with metal and still e able to open it up and close. It should work. If your welding skills are up to the task you could weld up a small garage type container out of corrugated metal pannels.
As of now I bet you got me wrong

do you plan on using it regularly?
does the ATV have an ECU?

My first though would be a shipping container with aluminium tape over the hinges, a wire mesh would work, but you'd have to ensure that the gaps are less than the wavelength.

A normal garden shed should work...but I do not know if the concrete would block electromagnetic radiation. It stops other radiation though

I hear a bag of chips will get it done.
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberèd—
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother

Here's the problem with EMP prepping: no one knows anything.
The "experts" say a lot of different things. Some say a solid steel box is the only option, some say plug everything into grounded surge protectors and you'll be fine. But are they talking about an atmospheric nuclear EMP or a solar flare EMP? They almost never specify. I recommend taking all your research and taking liberal approach to the best practices that make the most sense.

All I can say is, before building big, practice small. Build some small strong boxes, cell phone/ham radio sized, and test them.
I picture Faraday cages much like water proofing caches: store everything in its own container as though it were being exposed to the elements on its own, then put those small containers into a bigger one that is equally protected from the elements. In this case your element isn't moisture and dirt but electrical energy in wave length formation.

Also, aluminum tape is a great recommendation, but you have to find the electonic circuit specific stuff with conductive adhesive, or to won't be effective

Dont forget to ground everything. I dont think a cold water pipe is good enough.

Every frequency has a different wave length. So if using conductor mesh you would need different layers of different sizes. Not like the one in Enrmy of the State. Box within a box etc...
