North Carolina West Virginia camping info....

Post by doc66 » Fri Jul 05, 2013 11:47 am

Junior and I are looking for areas to camp (not drive and park state parks) along I-77 in North Carolina/ West Virginia. Headed out in two weeks. We'd like to hike in about 3-4 miles and overnight. Maybe with some scenic views, river, waterfalls, what have you. Camping styles will be hammock and bivy, so tent sites are not as important.

Most of the info I've found so far has been for drive and park. Not interested in this. I guess I'm spoiled by living where I can see the Smokey's from my backyard here in South Carolina!

Thanks in advance.

If you are willing to stop in Virginia there are ton of places you will be driving right by.

Walnuts flats has falls and trails:

Or you can go with any number of dispersed camping areas in the GW:

If you make a side trip South you can do Mt. Rogers. It is not steep but it is a long climb and you can summit the highest point in VA and camp near the top primitive. This is an in and out but there are several camp ground near by too.

What you sound like you want is AT.

There is AT access just North of Bland, VA. You can hike in camp "wherever" and then hike out. Take the Bland HWY 52 exit and head into Bland then North on 52. You will see the access a few miles from town. IDR any water falls on the trail but it is a real pretty hike and drive.
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberèd—
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother

Thanks. I'll look those up and see what might work out for us. We plan on hitting a place in WV and then coming South from there.

Anything is good. Junior is headed to college this fall and we want to get something in before then.

Yup, AT crosses 77 in VA, so do that, especially if you haven't ever hiked it... cause then you can say you have! :lol:

...But research it, some of it if pretty tough hiking, steep/rocky... but I have no experience in that area, so I don't know. But it's summer, so you won't freeze to death anyway.
