World's Largest Post-Apocalyptic Festival in Mohave Desert

Enter the Thunderdrome: Inside the world's largest post-apocalyptic festival where thousands of Mad Max fans gather in the desert

Wasteland Weekend is an annual four-day festival that allows lovers of the Mad Max movie franchise to see what it is really like to live in a society where civilization is crumbling

For many, the end of the world might seem daunting, but for these festival goers a post-apocalyptic world in the middle of a Californian desert is a form of escapism

At least this is the case for Mike Orr who is known as 'Sweet Lips' at Wasteland and who described the event as 'spiritual' and 'inspirational'

The four-day post-apocalyptic party in the Mojave desert began in 2010 and has seen steady growth each year - this year's event is set to be held from September 22 to 25

Yep I learned about Wasteland awhile back but have not gone myself.

Basically it is a post apocalyptic Renaissance Faire based upon but not limited to the Mad Max universe from what I have heard of it. Though unlike Ren faires, Wasteland requires costumes. You can't go in without one, so everyone looks silly and you don't get people in civi dress gawking at you. A lot of folks compare it to Burning Man, and in a lot of ways it is a lot more like what Burning Man was like in the early years. However BM is mostly free flow user created content, and Wasteland is much more organized and not only provides the entertainment, but discourages user created entertainment other than the costumes people bring.

If I was in the CA or AZ area I might consider giving it a go, but I don't have the curiosity to travel from WA for it.
"Once a man has seen society's black underbelly, he can never turn his back on it. Never pretend, like you do, that it doesn't exist"

"None of you seem to understand. I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with ME!"

There are a shitton of rules for the event:

http://www.wastelandweekend.com/about/rules/
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberèd—
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother

We had a much smaller version of this in South Carolina Last month. If was hosted by the guys at Fallout Nukelanta at a place called Eastwind Castle. There will be more in the future, I'll try to remember to post them here for anyone interested.
