My oldest children are 8 and 6, Im looking for a board game that teaches or introduces basic survival skills in a fun and challenging way but is simple enough for the 7 to 10 range.

D&D would over complicate things, even something Talisman-like would be a bit too much.

Anyone know of a TEOTWAWKI board game that is reasonably simple and stays a board game?

Some (most) are a little over the top, but #5 (Doom and Bloom SURVIVAL! ) and #9. (Outdoor Survival) look interesting.
#1 (Axis and Allies) is good for the history buff.

A friend of mine had a board game called "The Worst Case Scenario". It was a pretty standard race to the finish type game where you advance by answering survival-related trivia questions.

We only played it once, because from a board game perspective it was boring as shit. If you put in a lot effort into acting excited that might make it fun for kids. I remember some of the stuff being wrong/outdated, so if you get it you might want to go through the cards first. You could also make up your own questions if you're going to be running the game rather than playing along with them.

A good way to make any game more interesting might be to have small prizes for doing well.

Not to push a D&D type game, but have you considered going mostly free form without relying on a set of written rules? I can understand why you might not want to just because role play games can be time consuming and board games are relatively convenient to just take out and play.

I could be fun to integrate a challenge element to a survival role play game where people play as themselves. For example, if someone says that they could start a fire by making a bow drill with their bootlace another player could call them out on it. Instead of stopping the game, it would probably be better to just set the issue aside and split the difference in difficulty modifiers. At a later time the person could try to start a fire by making a bow drill with their boot lace. If the person succeeds in making the fire they could be awarded points while the person who called bullshit on them gets docked points, and if they fail the bonuses and penalties would be reversed.

Simpler, bare bones RPG system evolving around D6. YOu can build whatever world they're into, from robots to aliens to whatever else.

Risk, if they're into long games.

zombicide ....this boardgame does a lot of team building and cooperation...might be a bit complex for kids under 8 or so.

Back in the 80's I had a deck of survival playing cards. They were the regular 52 card deck, but each suite corresponds to a skill set like clubs are shelter, hearts were first aid and so on.

You could get a deck and just play 21 or war. As the card faces come up, take a minute and read one or two aloud.

I also recommend enrolling your kids in Cub Scouts or Girl Scouts.
