Titanium grill?

Post by WILLIE » Fri Nov 14, 2008 4:30 am

I'm a back packer. Most of the back country cooking I do is boiling water for my dehydrated food. Recently, I bought a back packers grid called the grill put. It's nice to be able to cook over a fire, and not be dependent upon my msr superfly and accompanying gas can. My only gripe is the thing is damn heavy. It’s made of stainless steel. Anyone know of a company that makes a portable back packers grid made of titanium. If not, there's a great business opportunity here.

Are there any issues (like with aluminum or teflon) with cooking on titanium? (A quick google doesn't turn up anything...)

This isn't titanium, but its only 560 grams (about a pound?)

I've never seen A Titinium grill, but If I find one I'll let You know.

I imagine a welder could make You one from welding rods.

A Titanium Grill would be very light, but it would not radiate heat well,
so it would have Hot Spots.

Since You mostly boil water You can use a twig burning stove,
or just place 3 rocks the same size around the fire to support
your cooking pots. You can drive 3 tent stakes in the ground
the exact same height too. You probably have Titanium tent
stakes already.

You can grill meat directly on coals. Just blow off the ashes, and
lay the meat (Steak or thin cut game) on the coals.

Cheers!

look into a packable wood burning stove like the Makira wildwood or the Littlebug stove. Some one on here made one from scratch. Try a search on here and google for "woodburning packstove". If you diy, you could buy some ti sheet metal on ebay.
