Where To Get Wool Socks That Last?

Post by SteveCA » Sat Dec 08, 2012 4:38 pm

I'm looking for a good brand of wool socks that will last and where to get them. I have 10 or so pairs of wool socks that I've had for 20 years and I wear them regularly, they have no holes in them but the first ones I bought are starting to get a bit thin, so, I'm looking to replace them. I have bought others since but I'm lucky if I get 6 months out of anything I get from the likes of wally world or the like, and that's being put into the cycle of rotation with the others so maybe 8 - 12 wears at the most.

Any ideas where to get some really good quality wool socks?

If you have a Costco membership, their multipacks of wool-blend crew-length socks are always a great deal. Other than some exterior pilling, they seem to hold up fine.

There's also Wigwam brand socks. They have a huge variety of styles; I think I usually get their Merino Comfort Hikers (67% merino plus nylon/elastic/acrylic) for wearing in my winter boots on my commute. Same thing, some exterior pilling but seem to hold up great, and not scratchy. Plus they're made in the US, using US-sourced materials whenever possible, so that's a plus. (Dunno where the Kirkland ones are made, I forget what the label said.)

I can't vouch for them lasting several years since we haven't had them that long, but my husband wears his in fall/winter while walking his postal route and they've certainly held up a couple years so far.

Thanks for the reply,

I found some 'made in USA' 71% & 78% merino wool socks on ebay for a pretty good price so I picked up a bunch of them. If they don't last long it won't be a huge loss.

Darn Tough is the best, longest lasting sock I have owned. They are guaranteed. They are not cheap, so search around the internet for some sales. Their website links to a bunch of vendors, so shop around for the best deal. I love their mountaineering sock with the 'terry loop' interior. I wear them year round.

I watch for sales on Wigwam though I now have one pair around a year old that got a hole in though but I wear them everywhere.
Wigwam didn't have a lot in small sizes so I've been buying Darn Tough for my wife because they have more in size small but they don't seem to be as thick as Wigwam.
Campmore just sent me a sale on socks e-mail

Wigwam makes some merino socks that are really good.

I've had a couple of pairs for a year and a half now and they're still holding up quite well. Not as good a price as when I bought them though...

I'm a fan of Smartwool socks.. bought about 10 pair during a really good sale back in 2004, and I still have most of them. Some got lost and a couple wore through, but the rest are still going strong.

Maybe I'm spoiled, but the last time I really needed good wool socks, I had a friend knit them for me. She knits them really huge, then soaks them in warm water to shrink them. Surely you know someone who knits, or maybe you could learn? Handcrafted is the way to go.

edited to mention: this time of year it is easier to get somebody to do this for you- just mumble about winter and cold feet. Socks almost magically appear.

I'm a knitter. I still prefer buying rather than have to hand-knit them. :P

My wife is a knitter! in fact she is going to be on the cover of Knitty magazine next month. And she has never knitted me any wool socks!

I think it's time for a talk.

Well, we had 'the talk', she knitted me a pair for my birthday this year, I forgot

Think before you post.....

3 words....DARN TOUGH SOCKS

Talk to any AT,PCT, or CDT thru hiker and the majority will recommend Darn Tough Wool Socks. If they can handle +2000 miles of hiking, they should last a long time for your needs. REI and a few sporting goods stores carry them, if not you can get them online.

I've been very happy with my socks from Covert Threads.

I've bought several pairs of Brownings lately. Make sure you get the 85% Merino. $9.95 at Rural King.
Shot 'em, now I'm gonna hang 'em, then I'm gonna burn 'em!

Poor Paladin1!
What did it cost you to get out of the doggy house?
My wife knitts as well, quilts and the whole shebang but I'm pretty sure I got the last one in her generation that does. She has to wear gloves when handling wool, but she does a wicked pair of socks!
As for store bought ones, I like this thread for information!

Well, she got a $3000.00 camera for her birthday and I got a pair of socks, so she couldn't really put me in the dog house.

I think I'm going to order one pair from several of the vendors mentioned and then not only will I have more wool socks, but will be able to compare them side by side.

They are. It sometimes takes a few minutes for my feet acclimate with wool, but never with these socks. They are also surprisingly comfortable in summer since wool is temperature regulating.

I bought 4 pair of these a few years ago and liked them so much I bought another 3 when I saw some on sale. All 7 pair are in great shape and I wear them all the time. I own other styles of Darn Tough and other popular brands like Smartwool, but the mountaineering socks are by far the best and most comfortable. My other wool socks are practically brand new since I never wear them because I wear the mountaineering socks so much.

Another brand that I recently discovered is Point6. They are a merino blend and are constructed like old school Smartwool (before the PhD line). Some of my old Smartwools lasted for 200+ days of use, and I expect the Point6 socks to hold up just as well.
