I wonder if it flattens out if it hit from the top.

I get why a helmet is useful but in an earth quake I would be more worried about pancaking floors than falling chunks...though I guess chunks are more likely.

Looks like someone got a commission from Devo, then had to come up with an alternate use.

Or maybe a thinking cap from the 2005 H2G2 movie:

I just don't understand...

There's no warning for an earthquake, aftershocks excluded.

So what use is a helmet cuz you wont have time to don it.... Unless you wear it all the time....

Then why does it fold?

The inventor needs to wear a helmet

My first thought was "will that fold back into my head if hit with sufficient force?" I guess you could be a "what not to do in case of emergency" story for future generations...

Not the best looking helmet but I'm curious about its sturdiness.

I'm partly tempted to buy one (assuming it's an actual production item and not some prototype that'll never be made) and just whack the crap out of it.

Wouldn't you shake it? I meant to test it's total effectiveness? It's a earthquake safety helmet , not a whack it safety helmet

At $71 each, I think I'll have to find something else to use for my Devo costume... ;)

But you can protect both of your wives and your kids for the low, low price of $355.

Imagine having to evacuate during an earthquake or typhoon. Think of the spine-chilling experience of seeing a pane of glass from a window fall onto a road and shatter during a live television broadcast. In dangerous situations such as these, the first priority is to protect one’s head. Falling objects are particularly dangerous. In residential areas, these include roof tiles, the outdoor units of air conditioners and potted plants. In shopping and office districts, hazards include signboards, neon signs and shards of glass.
Wearing a helmet during an evacuation keeps one’s hands free, reducing the risk of stumbling and allowing one to proceed safely while carrying a flashlight. However, despite awareness of the benefits of helmets, many are resistant to the idea of having them on hand owing to a lack of storage space and unfamiliarity with their use. Accordingly, there is a clear demand for emergency helmets that offer both efficient storability and outstanding performance.
A critical aspect of efforts to protect people and reduce injuries in disaster situations is to ensure the seamless integration of self-help (protecting oneself), mutual aid (rescue and relief) and public assistance (recovery and reconstruction) initiatives. High-performance, easy-to-use emergency helmets that are appropriate not only for evacuation use and inclusion in emergency supplies, but also for post-disaster recovery and reconstruction efforts, are thus recognized as indispensable.

multiple use products as well. This is also earthquake protection - it is padded.

even high-ranking pols have earthquake hats....

more about kids and school drills

it is easy to mock something you don't understand. It is less easy to ask yourself - Why do they do this?

Dead children are no joke....which is why they drill so often. N/A could learn some lesson here - if anyone paid attention.

final jab
I lived thru a 7.2M earthquake here last year, just a few miles from the epicenter - no fun but was prepared.

Kobe, Japan, 1995. The city center was 68km from the epicenter of a 6.8M quake. Ever have this happen in your area? Yeah - you'd being wearing a helmet as well...

I don't think the point is to mock wearing protective gear on their head, but rather this particular piece of safety gear.

It's like mocking, say, some of the dumbass "gun locks" out there. That's not to say we disagree with safe gun storage practices, just specific appliances (supposed) intended for that task. E.g. I saw one once which was supposed to be placed in the barrel, and had some sort of expanding bit on the end. It didn't, however, necessarily block a round from being chambered and fired. That's a design which--for several reasons--is well-deserving of mockery.

YEAAA Not so much . That's all just better then nothing. If you're not wearing OSHA approved hard hat head protection you're deluding yourself. And maybe it's just me but head protection was never the first thing on my mind DURING an earthquake. My absolute number 1 piece of gear for both during and after a earthquake is a good flashlight, My second is good strong boots, The amount of sharp, pointy, stabby, slashy things is unbelievable. And you will be walking on it. During an earthquake ,one can protect your head with your arms as you evacuate a building . This would be enough protection for nearly anything those hoods would protect from.
