What kind of blade is this?

For those who live in areas where firearms are not an option and those that are smart enough to have a back up.

What kind of blade is this?

Post by Maverick299 » Fri Dec 21, 2012 2:20 pm

I couldn't find a still shot on the internet so I am forced to post a video clip. At about 1:57 he reaches for a blade that appears to be some sort of swept edge short sword, but I am an idiot when it comes to swords. Can someone tell me what this is, name, style, anything? Seems like it would be a rather effective weapon.

**great, now I can't even get the video to embed......sorry.

It's a sword that used to be offered at museum replicas, I think it was either the Mongolian sword or called a barbarian sword.

It looks like a curved Persian sword called a scimitar (pronounced sear-mear-tar). This appears to be a common mans version. A warrior or executioner scimitar is broader at the point and a noble mans is narrow and bejeweled. The are all used solely for slashing. Don't believe the movies, you stab with one of these and the blade will bend then snap. The are, however, razor-bloody-sharp, pardon the pun. There are records of one "[beheading a camel with a single stroke]" It gives you an idea of how lethal they were.
Either that or it is a make of chinese dao,,,,, come to think of it,,, it's probably a dao.

to me it more similar to a "scimitar" since lot's of european were in Arabian some maybe convert themselves to use a Arabian style blade since they have pretty good advantage

it seem similar to the one of the movie with a more curved blade

as many said i would recommend you to ask storm crow , since it seem like his specialty

There a lot of blades from different cultures with similar geometry, but often varying handles, guards, and pommels (counterweight). This falls squarely in the Parang/Scimitar/Messer/Falchion/Chinese Broad Sword category that all have a single edged deep blade, with a slightly forward weight, deep belly, often curved, and are designed for powerful cuts and/or slashes. They may or may not have a clip point.

You guys need to remember this is fucking Army of Darkness we are talking about. Historical accuracy was not a strong point of that movie.

bonanacrom had the right of it—I remember that blade from Museum Replicas years ago. Looks like they've recently made an updated version that's a little fancier & slightly less curvy.

It looks most like a Chinese broadsword, and a cheap performance one at that. Perhaps that is what they modified for use in the film.
