Blade Show 2017

Post by Storm Crow » Sat May 13, 2017 1:57 pm

Nothing is finished yet, but a lot in the works. I have two tables again this year, with the plan being one for forged work and one for stock removal.

Small forged knives:

Large forged knives:

My eye-catcher is, of course, the post-nuclear barbarian sword, with a 21" blade and 33" overall length.

Image

And hopefully I'll have some stock-removal Little Roks, Benghazi Warfighters, and mini-parangs, as well as tomahawks.

Very cool! The Barbarian sword is pretty sweet, love the styling! The little knives are pretty cool, What's the blade length/overall on those? The last set you posted the chopper looking ones are really cool too!

I may be putting in an order for a couples knife set similar to those little knives! If you're still doing orders from us peasants here on ZS. You know, seeing as how you're a big TV star now ;)

Halfapint - The small ones have blades around 7".

I'm still not taking new orders on forged work while I try to whittle down my stack of commissions. That being said, shoot me an e-mail. Also, I always have inventory left after Blade.

Once I figure out the house situation I'll definitely do that!

Got my mid-tech stuff powdercoated and took it to get my touchmark laser engraved this morning at JB Knife and Tool, who will be my neighbor in the San Antonio colony.

Here's a Woodsman 'hawk getting frickin' laser beams shot at.

Thanks, man! I'll still be knocking 'em out. I'm finally getting the ball rolling on the mid-tech stuff I've been trying to do for several years (thanks to Forged in Fire prize money  ) and hope to bring a number of interesting designs to the table with it, in addition to my forged work.

Really look forward to that you bring out! Curious that's the "mid-tech stuff" not sure I understand.

Halfapint - "Mid-tech" is essentially making use of modern manufacturing techniques to do small-batch manufacturing of knives. It allows a knife maker to increase production, keep prices relatively low, and keep quality high. It's basically low-level production, and is distinguished from "custom" or "handmade" usually. It is used a lot in the high-end folder world, though it is definitely used in fixed blades as well. It makes use of a lot of CNC equipment, and can range everywhere from just having blanks waterjet cut and all else done by the maker to having everything but the final assembly farmed out to specialty shops.

At this point, I'm at the low-tech end of mid-tech (waterjetted blanks that I'm grinding by hand and heat treating myself, handles that are shaped with routers using bearing bits and jigs), but I'm going to be picking brains at the Blade Show and taking a long hard look at scraping the money together to do some runs getting blades Berger ground.

I basically want to shift some of my commonly requested designs (Benghazi Warfighter, Little Rok, and mini-parang) to the mid-tech and free up my forged line for more creative experimentations with blade and handle utility. Later, I have an ever-growing list of ideas to be executed through the mid-tech line.

Expect mid-tech prices to be higher than most factory knives (especially the lower end stuff you find in WalMart, etc.) but lower than a similar custom piece from the same maker. Quality should be high, with varying degrees of fanciness.

I finished up the post-nuclear barbarian sword, so at least I won't have an empty table. :D

For some reason it looks shorter in photos than it seems in person. Final weight is 3.25 pounds. A little weighty, but I had no trouble working it one-handed on the whetstone.

Image

Image

Both edges shave hair.

Image

24" of Kydex for a 21" blade. This is the maximum that I'm set up to comfortably handle.

Image

Everything else that is forged has the wraps epoxied and sheaths molded.

Nice! Really like the mini meat cleaver. Do you make many blades used more for food/cooking purposes?

Finally doing a Blade Show after-report.

It was the best knife show I've done, and it flew! I didn't get to get around to talk with more than a small handful of the folks I wanted to, and sold all but three pieces at the show. Those three were all claimed before I made it back home.

It was the biggest Blade Show yet. The first year I was there, a large margin of empty space surrounded the tables. The year after that they pushed to the outer walls. This year they had booths in the foyer out front.

I haven't done a show yet where I didn't end up putting the final edges on in the hotel room.

Image

It was my buddy and fellow Forged in Fire champion Tobin Nieto's first time to have a table at Blade, and he, of course, made it entertaining. My loverly bride holds a glaive that he made, and he has my sword. You always need an eye-catcher on your table, and these are ours.

Image

Always enjoy it when Dan Keffeler comes by. Among other things, he had a Super Assassin with him.

Image

Which Tobin seemed to like.

Image

This fellow bought several blades from me, including the Ludicrously Oversized Bowie.

Image

Got to meet Ryu Lim, fellow Forged in Fire champion.

Image

Jason Knight was a contestant on the unaired pilot episode of Forged in Fire. He won with this Damascus gladius. He did all right. :D

Image

Mardi Meshsejian (another FiF contestant) made a katzbalger that was undoubtedly prettier than the one I built for the show. Mine was lighter, though; there's a full pound of sterling silver in the guard! Gorgeous work with a stainless san mai blade, anodized titanium handle, sterling guard, and fossilized walrus ivory pommel.

Image

He also had this gorgeous o-tanto with stainless san mai blade and fossilized walrus ivory handle.

Image

Tobin was as enthralled with RMJ Tactical's official rendition of the Frank Frazetta Deal Dealer ax as I was last year.

Image

There was a small disagreement that was amicably settled.

Image

Luke Swenson liked Tobin's glaive in spite of it not being a slipjoint. :D

Image

My brother-in-law talking with Tracker Dan. An interesting study in contrasts.

Image

Ed Calderon, the Taco Ninja, poses with some $5 foam nunchucks someone sold my nephew. Tobin's wife and daughter are in the background, oblivious that they are being posted across forums and social media.

Image

Don Carlos Andrade, who makes beautiful culinary cutlery, and Joe Flowers, who designs for Condor Tool and Knife.

Image

This bolo, o-tanto, and sword were the only items that didn't sell at the show.

Image

We got invited to tour RMJ Tactical's new shop in Chatanooga, TN, on the way back home. Enjoyed it a lot! Ryan made some comment about "the bellies of bladesmithing". :D

Image

While my wife and I spent a couple of days in the Smoky Mountains on our way home, I shot some better pics of the unsold items. All three were bought before we got back to Texas.

Image

Image

Image

Image

This Sasquatch waded into the stream and grabbed the sword, but eventually wandered off.

Image

In spite of the long handle on the sword, the Sasquatch's paws filled it with a two-handed grip.

Image

I didn't get a good picture of my two tables at the show. I did have one of the four smaller tantos travel back with me so that I could ship it to the customer so he wouldn't have to mess with getting it back home.

Thank you for posting the pics. I have been a knife fan for as long as I can remember, since I watched old men trade pocket whittlers at the pool hall when I was a boy. I have an RMJ Talon that has seen a very rough life but you would not know it by looking at it, and I hope that it gets handed down in the family for a few centuries. I'll add one of your blades soon enough. These days, when I hear someone talk about "buying American" I always think of blacksmiths; but, a good quality blade, handmade, is certainly not a new thing under the sun.

12 Gauge Chimp - There's nothing like it anywhere. It's the biggest knife show in the US, probably in the world. There are a few knife shows in Texas, but on a smaller scale.

I only do two shows a year, Blade Show in Atlanta at the beginning of June and the Usual Suspect Network Gathering in Las Vegas over the Labor Day weekend. Very different shows, each with its own merit.

Thanks for the info, Storm Crow.

Maybe one of these days I'll be able to make a trip to Blade Show. I know I can't get into SHOT Show since I'm not in the firearms industry (and running a small review blog doesn't count I've been told), but maybe I can get into Blade Show.

If not, I'll just be content with seeing your pics of it here on ZS. :)
