Bola Launcher: Useful against the Undead?

Sometimes you may just want to stop a Zombie from walking around.

- Silent killing afterwards
- Collecting specimen for experiments
- "Recruiting" Zombies to make Zed Sherpas (Michonne style)

I thought that a Bola might be a good method for that. Well, this is The Slingshot Channel, so I have to try to make a Bola Launcher with rubber bands as a power source.

What do you guys think about that?

BTW, google found a bola launcher toy from Jurassic Park...

This is one I've been hoping you would do for awhile, can't wait to see what you come up with.

The word bola is fun to say.

I think this is an excellent idea for a project.

I finished the launcher yesterday. It was a ton of work. Two full blown "slotted barrel" type sling-x-bows, with two individual triggers, plus the central trigger and the fan-out mechanism.

You can adjust the angle between the barrels, as I have no idea how much of an angle is needed. It was dark yesterday when I called it a day, so I don't know how well this works.

Today, another film team will show up, and tomorrow a news magazine will visit. Had an 11 minute piece on German nationwide TV yesterday. I am really busy and seriously think about getting an agent.

I also had to make the bola. Two pieces of 20mm rectangular steel, connected with a length of paracord. Each steel weight is 87 gramms = 3 oz.

Joerg,

I love you and your vids, but I have to point out the irony of what you're saying here.

Unless you're doing all these TV appearances for charity and unless you get no money from your youtube thing whatsoever...

I think the argument of "it's just a hobby and that's why I don't sell slingshots" thing is kinda played out.

I'm curious what you think about this. If I remember correctly, your dayjob is an executive level position. I don't think at this stage in the game you'd want to do slingshot stuff full time, but if you do get an agent, couldn't you employ someone in China, the US, and maybe Germany to produce a few of your designs to sell year-round? I bet a dedicated craftsman could pump these things out like crazy, and if they are made in-country, you don't need to worry about import regs. You could let each craftsman run their business like a Joerg franchise: they use your designs and your name and give you a hefty cut.

Seems bulletproof to me. :)

I don't take any money from the TV guys. Maybe I should. I do get money from youtube, though - but my rule is that I reinvest ALL of that cash into my channel. Hence the 16 kiloEuro Hispeed cam.

If I would start a company selling things, how would that be different from my job? Taxes, lawyers, unhappy customers, fraud, deadlines, customs... issues, issues, issues. Doesn't sound like fun anymore.

As long as all I do is free entertainment, not many such issues apply. I can do what I want, without any (external) pressure.

I always give free designs to slingshot businesses, therefore you can get some of my slingshots from these guys. Dankung, Milbroproshotuk, Kugel-Winnie, John "Gamekeeper" Web, just to name a few. But I don't get a cut, because I don't want to so I don't have to do anything.

Oh wow, that works amazing! Just need some padded weights and a live test subject to try it on now...

I Have a tiny suggestion for you my good man; It may seem counterintuitive but if you set the angle of attack at over 30 degrees (I'd go for 33 myself) the angular momentum will be greatly increased. Or to put it another way, if you set the release or the bolas wider, more of the energy of the cast is put into keeping the bolas apart. When they strike they will wrap round the target faster And, more importantly, TIGHTER because of centrifugal force ;)
P.s. you should try making a version of this, I think with that launcher you'd have to play over the length of a football field;)

Trust me... I completely respect your stance on this.

That said, if you went with the endorsement idea I posted above, all you'd have to do is allow someone to use your name on products they make from your designs and then send you a %.... In this example, the person actually producing the product would take on all the risk. Michael Jordan doesn't take on any risk when spam sells sneakers with his name on them. You have become a worldwide slingshot celebrity.

It's just an idea... I think that the ability in this age to basically create a proven product without ever actually selling anything on the mass market (with the exception of those Dankung slingshots you created) is really interesting.

One of these days someone in the US is going to be smart enough to start mass producing slingshots based on your designs and selling them on ebay or something... If that happens and they don't give you credit for the design, would you take any sort of action? Would it even be possible?

Please understand I am a big fan. I am not trying to be disrespectful in any way. I believe your designs are the wave of the future. I asked you a question similar to this about 3 or 4 years ago, but I'm curious if your increased popularity has changed your opinion any. :)

I have given designs to several slingshot makers, and they do use my name for advertising. With my permission. I will continue to do this.

In fact, a friend of mine has approached me a while ago with the idea to start a business. He is in need of a job and I gave him a design - probably my best ever.

http://slingshotchannel.blogspot.de/201 ... mould.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

He is in the process of having an injection mould tool made, and wants to mass produce it using glass fibers and glass balls to enhance the strength of the plastic. If the product is any good, I'll show it on my channel - under one condition.

- I will publish a full tutorial including the templates for those who want to make it at home, from plywood
- I will publish the 3D data so those with access to a 3D printer can make their own

He wants to sell the product including a great band set for 20 Euros. A fair price.

We'll see!

I'll be looking for it.

You are far too honourable a man, Joerg. You make the rest of us look bad :P
I really love this launcher, it looks awesome and works so much better than I had envisioned.
How many non lethal weapons are there in existence which can completely incapacitate a man from such a distance without harming him and which can be made yourself with common tools?
Bugger all, that's how many.
Keep it up, Joerg!
