Here are some pics from the three day filming in South Carolina. This was done for a network that may bring on a show with me, my physicist brother Hartmut, and the very successful slingshot artist Nathan Masters. The concept: Making non firearms weapons for people that want to be prepared for an apocalypse.

The first "episode" brought us to South Carolina.

We made two weapons, a 15 ft long brick launching cannon and a two shot arrow shooter.

The idea of the cannon: A powerful weapon made from scrap, shooting ammo from the junk heap!

It took us quite some time to make the thing - 15 hours with the three of us beeing very busy. The used wood was warped and put splinters galore into our fingers. We used an old water pipe for the winch and wheel axis, and the carriage plus the wheels were made from old plywood that still had concrete smeared all over it.

But in the end it works - it can shoot a brick 200 yards far, with a force that is quite impressive. We shot it against a water container for a fountain, and it went right through with an enormous splash. We delivered it to the clients, a family that lives in the mountains. The bricks crossed their pond with ease!

An approaching enemy in a vehicle would have to face serious resistance...

The weapon is cocked with a built in winch, and then the brick is loaded right into the breech. You can fire about one shot per minute, easily.

It looks a bit spindly, but in fact it is really solid. We named it the "praying mantris" for obvious reasons, and even put some eyes on the muzzle... :)

Here is the cannon:

The breech loading feature: Simply open a trap door and load in a brick.

I made the two shot crossbow at home, shipped it to the site two weeks ago. No show. We had to start over again - two weapons in just 48 hours! Busted our behinds for sure.

We have done our very best. Let's hope we will get the show!

One brick is approx 40,000 grains

Velocity equals 100/fps (guess, likely low)

KE = 888 ft/pd or about the same as a .223 at 100 meters

Increase the velocity to paint ball gun levels and you are looking at 6-8K ft/lb. I would say it would be quite lethal and very damaging to a car. The brick unless it was hardened much more would likely shatter on impact with a hardened object, reducing anti-material effectiveness. It could still destroy bullet proof glass though.

I'm just wondering... purely hypothetically of course... but couldn't you put a Molotov in there instead of a brick? A nice reasonably stable contact explosive or a fuse and you have got a Car/Armoured Raider/Tank Buster. And now my internal mod is telling me to shut up.

Can we fire Water Balloons from it?

I have been in the US many times, mostly on business.

The bricks are weighing close to 2 kg, about 4,4 lb. They fly at 50 m/s, 164 fps. 2500 Joules or 1844 ft-lb.

100 N momentum.

That is a devastating impact for sure.

Can you fire mollies from it? Sure, as long as the bottle fits in. A rimfire blank in a steel or lead tube, inserted in the mouth of the bottle, would make a good igniter, and also would make it front heavy so it does not tumble. If I can find a state where that is legal, I might give it a try.

If this show becomes a reality please let us know, because watching stuff like this would be amazing, seriously an anti-car brick launcher? That is beyond awesome.

Hey Joerg....

It would be great to see you on TV! You're YouTube videos are great. A friend and I are trying to make a couple of your slingbows now. I really want to see the brick launcher in action! Please keep us informed about the show!

Try to get that brick up to 150 meters per second for some real fun.

I don't see a way to do that without gunpowder or at least compressed air - rubber is simply not that fast. Plus, the brick would probably be pulverized in the chamber.

But who knows... three years ago I was at 130 Joules, now I am at 2500. Let us see where I will be in three years from now.

Unfortunately, this isn't my workshop, just an empty warehouse in South Carolina. My workshop is a converted garage, bursting at the seams now...

Well, not quite as jealous anymore. I've just hit that point where tools vs space caused a serious decrease in productivity.
