Who of us volunteers, what do you do?

Post by taipan821 » Fri Feb 24, 2017 1:15 am

Hello all

Got a question for everyone on the forum, what proportion of the forum members here volunteer?

I volunteer in the State Emergency Service (similar to CERT but better :awesome: ) trained in search, rescue, storm damage, comms and chainsaws

what do you volunteer as/with, what are your specialties?

interested to find out

I have done Cub Scout day for a while now, I did a couple of summers on the slingshot range, and the other 10 on the archery range.

Trail construction and maintenance for a local non-profit, serve meals at a local soup kitchen (working with a population that's living their own personal apocalypse every day), play the role of surrogate dad for the cub scout son of a single mom (for overnight and weekend trips). I'm currently on hiatus, but I've also been a member of the publications committee for the aforementioned trail organization, writing articles for their quarterly newsletter.

:clownshoes:

I volunteer with all levels of Scouts, With the cubs, mostly supervision of staff, QM, etc - Typically "that guy".
I'm leadership with a Boyscout troop and all the service that that includes. I cook for most Council Scouting functions and I cook for the OA (Scouting) folks 4 times a year. I assist with training the adults that teach the scouts. I cook occasionally for the Church my troop belongs to.
I've recently started working with the Toys for Tots program - there's something about being allowed to speed well above the speed limit with a PD escort to get to the town you're delivering in...
I've looked in to the local Races/Ares group and I *might* start working with them, but havent decided yet. I listened to them during the hurricane last year and they were well understaffed for the shelters they were working with. A few hams had to travel back and forth during the hurricane.

I do a lot of pro bono work though my church and my wife's synagoge.

I am also on a local public board.

In the past my wife were foster parents for about a decade; technically we were paid about $10 a day when the state remembered to send a check. So it was not technically volunteer service, but we sure did not do it for the $10 .

I believe in doing what you can to fix a problem you know about (even if it is not much, at least it is something) is much better than carrying signs and/or whining and moaning about it.

I volunteer at the nearby Military base, when I am in the states and when I am in the PI I volunteer at St. Joseph College/Church in Olongapo.

Granted not a whole lot of time, but I try to do a few hours everyday if possible state side. About the same in the PI, just depends on how I feel and what they need me to do. Usually painting and stuff along those lines, gets me away from all the females in my family and Lil's, as well gives me something to do and to give something back to the community.

Started way back in the 70's, there was an Amerasian (Korean/American) orphanage in TDC that we used to volunteer at, the children were from the bar-girls and American forces stationed there. No love lost over there for Hapa Haole children.....now known as just Hapa.

That is how I ended up with Jan-Di.......then she grew up.

It is great to see where people volunteer their time.
It would be interesting to hear some of the stories one only seems to get through volunteering :)
Anyone else?

Hmmmm, well not much to tell about the base. I volunteer at the Pharmacy, handing out pills. Basically someone comes up to the counter, I check their ID, ask them if the pills are for them or someone else, then ask their birthday.

Scan the ID, find the pills and then scan the pills so it shows up on a screen, ask them if they have any questions or would like to talk to the Pharmacist, then hand them their pills and tell them to have a nice day.

Kind of boring as all heck and they have a whole bunch of volunteers so (all former AD types that are retired and looking for something to do) it is hard to get any hours.

I am looking for something else to do.......to burn a few hours but so far no luck....yet. I did do some volunteer work at the Airman's attic...but let's just say that did not workout because I was trying to hide from females and well all the volunteers there were women and they brought their drama to work...and their kids.

I did do some volunteer time with the Pearl S. Buck society in Olongapo City but they closed down or moved and I can not find them. They did a lot of work with AmeriAsian children and well that whole issue chaps my hide. Makes me want to hunt some people down and do very, very bad things to them. So now I just work at one of the Catholic College's/churches in OC.

That and buy meals for some of the street kids as well as showers (at a hotel over behind the McDonald's on Rizal. They rent out showers to people that do not have running water, so I provide the cash, the towels, the soap and shampoo and sometimes some clothes from either the used clothing stall or a store nearby. Just depends on the situation.

I've been helping disabled folks. Getting groceries, getting them to doctor's appointments, hanging out with them, and the like. I've also been providing no-cost home improvements for low-income folks.

I help at a cat shelter. It's an all-volunteer, non-profit, no-kill, feline-only shelter. It mostly involves cleaning and making sure the cats have fresh water and food, but I've also become the go-to handyman for the group. It's not uncommon for me to find a post-it note when I arrive asking that I fix or assemble something. Basically, if they have a chore that involves a power tool or ladder, I'm the one they call. I've been doing this for almost eight years.

I am familiar with this sort of work, personally and professionally. Generally between the missed work, holes in the wall and increased grocery bill it is a monetary loss. Merci Beaucoup to those that do it for the do it for the less extrinsic rewards.

Ground and inland waters SAR in Canada is all volunteers. We do get to see the cool military SAR guys once in a while if they happen to be in the area when we call for a helicopter.

I've done a range of things before but these days I'm slowly trying to reclaim an abandoned graveyard from the wilderness. There's no evidence anyone goes there to visit the dead anymore. Someone mows a small patch around the gate a few times a year. I'm clearing deadwood and brush when I go (so the mystery person can keep more area maintained).

I'm not hitting it hard and heavy because of time constraints, but I am moving faster than Mother Nature.

Actually, I don't know if this classifies as volunteering. I don't know the people buried there or the families and the mystery mower may be irritated I'm giving him more work.

It just seems the right thing to do.

I collect non-perishable snacks, hygiene items, and fun stuff (cards, games, dvds, books, etc) for the soldiers deployed to the middle east and send a couple boxes a month. I've gotten some super nice "email pals" that way!

Similar, but I donate direct to the organization that distributes to the troops. I used to ship direct to those deployed, but had one to many packages go "missing" in transit so I gave up.

I posted to your other thread in regards to this Barb.

I'm a CERT member, but I don't have any specialized training or skills within it. I have picked up the nickname "MacGyver" though, since I tend to be a bit better prepared than most!

The big one for me is that I'm a Municipal Liaison (ML) for the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). If you're not familiar with it, NaNoWriMo takes place in November each year and the goal for those who participate is to write an entire novel (defined as being 50,000 words in length) in one month. The MLs coordinate regional activities, send out encouraging emails, answer questions, and generally try to help the participants to have fun and cross the finish line. Last year was my first in this role, although I've helped the other MLs in my area out for years now. It doesn't take a lot of time during the rest of the year, but in the lead-up to November each year and during the event, it sort of takes over your life!

And I guess that singing in a choir is sort of a volunteer activity. Heck, I actually PAY to be a member, so it's definitely not something that I'm doing "professionally"! In addition to our own concerts, we occasionally sing for funerals, weddings, or community events, basically whatever our conductor lines up for us.

I volunteer with a local SAR group. I have not specialised that much, but have taken the squad leader courses, got my snowmobile permit this winter and was recently made transport leader. I'm also the janitor at the building we share with our parent organisation.

I'm sometimes nicknamed "destruction leader" for my clumsiness, and the table I broke... and the couch... and the door... :P At least being the janitor means I'm the one that has to fix it so nobody really complains :P
