We Have Lost One Of Our Own

Post by mantis » Tue Jan 03, 2017 9:06 pm

It is with a heavy heart that I announce to the group that we have lost one of our own. Member of ZS-003 Nazzareno Tassone was killed in action near the city of Raqqa, Syria while fighting as an international volunteer with the Kurdish YPG. Nazz volunteered to go and fight the scourge of ISIS and by all accounts was a capable and courageous fighter despite having no prior military experience beyond the two weeks of training provided by the YPG.

Very sad. At least his family knows he was trying to make a difference

In the scheme of things, going out fighting for a cause you believe in is not the worst way to go.
Raise a glass to him and keep his memory, a man with the courage to match his convictions.

I was shocked to see this headline today on the BBC. I'm now more shocked to know he was a fellow in ZS with me.

He did something, in a time when most people do nothing.

Nazzareno Tassone could not sit idly by while the American leadership imagines ISIL is some sort of jayvee team. Nazz chose to confront ISIL where they operate, offering his life to shield us from those wolves at our gates.

The Kurdish community and Kurdish veterans have organized a memorial service for Nazz in Ottawa at the National War Memorial on Monday January 9 and 11AM. Latest news is that YPG has successfully obtained the remains of one of the two men killed and are working to secure the release by ISIS of the other body. No word as of yet as to whether the recovered remains are Nazz or the British fighter killed with him. YPG is committed to recovering the remains and returning them to Canada at no cost to the family and the Canadian Heroes Association which supports veterans in Canada has offered to pay for the funeral. No date has been set for the funeral as of yet. There will also likely be a "Highway of Heroes" procession arranged in his honour.

Good.
All honor to YPG for their fidelity to a man who fell fighting along side them in this mutual cause.
Great credit also to the Canadian Heroes Association for reaching out to provide the final honors to this man.
If anyone in Ottowa can pass along a message to the Kurds holding the memorial service there.....please tell them their courtesy, dignity, and respect regarding this matter mean a great deal to many others.

I plan on being there and I will indeed pass that along.

If there are any ZS members in the Brantford Area who would like to go, I have two more seats available in my Jeep. Please send me a personal message.

Just a quick update. It was announced the other day that the YPG have at last recovered Nazz's remains from ISIS. He is being repatriated to Canada - no arrival date has been set. The Canadian Heroes Foundation is arranging an unofficial "Highway of Heroes" procession led by the North Wall Riders motorcycle club, memorial vehicles and limos for the family provided by the Canadian Heroes Foundation. Funeral (date to be determined) to take place at St.Andrews Church, Niagara Falls. I will be delivering a Eulogy in honour of Nazz and his service to humanity in the fight against ISIS.

If anyone here in the Brantford area would like to attend, I can carry several passengers in my Jeep and I am planning on joining the full procession from the funeral home in Toronto to the service in Niagara Falls. All are welcome including any ZSers near Niagara falls on the US side of the border.

Just a quick update, Nazz's body has been repatriated and the coroner has confirmed his identity. On Wednesday June 21st, beginning at  MacKinnon & Bowes funeral home at 2 Meridian Road, Toronto, Ontario, a Highway of Heroes procession will begin at 10AM led by the Canadian Heroes Foundation, the North Wall Riders and members of the Kurdish community. The procession will be publicized and we hope to get a good public attendance on the overpasses and bridges along the route. The procession will head down the Queen Elizabeth Way highway to Niagara and will end at the St. Andrews United Church in Niagara Falls at 5645 Morrison Street. Funeral to take place at 1PM with burial immediately after at the church cemetery. I will be driving down from Brantford and can carry up to three passengers from the Brantford area with me. I will also be delivering a Eulogy at the service.

For anyone not familiar with the Highway of Heroes....here is a primer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc6t6HLt7vA&t=92s

If any fellow ZSers near Niagara on either side of the border would be welcome at the service.

I have sat by fires in Kurdistan, shared tea/stories and walked a lot of their ground. I call them friends.
I salute your friend Nazzareno Tassone for standing beside them. R.I.P.
