I like Malloy's choice. Like every kid on my bus route, I received mine on my 10th birthday. She's averaged about 40 squirrel a year, given a high of 77 and a low of zero for those times I walk/ride from Nastyville to Shitburg. Tastes like chicken. .410/.22 OU.

OK, so the .410 slug doesn't do to the gelatin block what your Desert Eagle does.
Squirrel don't live on the internet.

Depending on local laws (I am buying this ahead of time, so it has to be 100% legal) Either a G35 with a shoulder stock (SBR) or a Marlin 1894s in .357.
John Wayne, maybe. But, if memory serves, Bond preferred mouse guns over rifles. He started out with a Beretta 418 .25 and then was upgraded, over his protests, by Q to the Walther PPK .32. It wasn't until some time after Ian Flemings died that his character started carrying 9mm, and even then he preferred subcompacts (ASP 9mm).moab wrote: Some of this makes me laugh too. Depends on the nature of the SHTF.

Sure it does. No one was scared off by a big hunting story featuring one squirrel? LOL..milFox wrote:Depends on the nature of the SHTF.
But who, given the chance of 1, chooses 1?
Yet, in the world of probability that is the answer.
If I could have but one it would be the one I wanted at that moment.
Still, the idea of the lightweight O/U, varmints, fire built out of the wind and some rocks to cook upon. This is nice , no matter if the known world has ended or not. I understand the interest in battery-fired, multiple-round, short barreled kinetic energy launchers but given the choice I would avoid all fighting and concentrate on living. It's a simple, well-proven combo, that Savage...

In a non-arms-use kinda SHTF (say, long term rapid coastal flooding) where I'm going to be making my way to a bug-out/INCH, do I really want to be toting a longarm that can't be concealed? You'll immediately be 'that guy', and what authority exists (homegrown or otherwise) will immediately focus on YOU.Asymetryczna wrote:Sure it does. Hardly grey man.
I'd look at the Sub2k or pistol, but more likely the sub2k being a carbine and all.
...
If it's classic zombies/foreign military/etc, and concealment isn't a question, well, then a more combat-oriented weapon like the ARs might be my go-to.
If it's more of a 'loss of external support' kinda thing (say, nuclear war and somehow Bangor getting vaporized didn't get us) .. and I don't ever expect resupply, and there's no large animal threat, might want to look at one of the black powder or 22s.

When I see those words written…”grey man” I immediately ask myself, has the writer been subjected to cold fear and shock? Could he or she really have meant “ashen?” You have a valid point though, either way. Although I think the only real possible answer is “the one that I have,” and since the rule does not allow one to discuss the potential growth rate of the “dire straits accumulative effect,” I like the options the O/U offer. It comes apart easily as well, if one were overly concerned with appearing at worse –neutral – during their long, halftime walk.

Do as Longy sez....longy wrote:can't cover the bases adequately without a concealable (taken down) silenced military style .223 autorifle (with a .22 lr conversion unit) and a pocket pistol, preferably 9mm. You have to have something with real reach, power, and penetration, and you need something that can be readily accessed from concealment, while wearing a pack (with your rifle taken down and stowed in said pack). Much of your stuff can be rolled up in your shelter/sleep gear and used as a pack frame/pad, leaving much more room inside of your pack for stuff that's small, hard, easily lost, very valuable, or which you dont want seen.

Not exactly an attribute that supports your recommendation. Am I correct in assuming you meant "fairly accurate"?KILLERtj wrote: rarely accurate

Re: SHTF and you can only have one gun
Thats why all of my aks have polish beryl folding stocks. Fits in my 60l backpack just fine. Take it out and extend the stock and youve got a full battle rifle. Even if you went ak in 5.56 with folding stock your even better. As the ammo is even more common than 7.62. You could of course do the same with a folding stock ar or sbr of either flavor.
I dont see the utility of a shotgun in a shtf or paw scenario. To heavy, to one dimensional, and not concealable enough. Id take a short 5.56 or 7.62 any day. Not to mention the greater amount of ammo you can carry over shotgun rounds. That stuff is heavy and bulky.
I dont see hikers making those same mistakes. Even if your not military - go hike. And then come back and tell me what you want to carry. Youll be cutting toothbrushes just to save ounces.
I agree with grey man only to the point of being able to conceal your longgun until out of the city. Beyond that your not going to want to be digging in your pack for your rifle. Yes. A sidearm too.
But considering the amount of survival items one would need on hand. I dont see anyone correctly outfitted not carrying a full pack, sidearm and rifle. So whats the point of greyman? Ya. You dont want to walk around looking like a mark. But either youve got the equipment to defend yourself and stay alive or you dont. It will be readily viewable who is prepared and who isnt. Who you might be able tosteal from if your a bad guy. And who might give you trouble.
Id rather prepare properly, have good camo and awareness. And really hide in the brush. Than walk around in carhartts with a hammer in my pocket. But im a Marine. I think tactically. And if your going to be tactical theres not a lot you can do to hide it 24/7.
Anyway. Old debate. Ive never put much emphasis on greyman. Other than not wearing my camo in the city and stowing my rifle in my pack when need be. But im also much more worried about baddies than finding food.
Im confident in both areas. But ive been an avid hunter, fisher, outdoorsman since childhood. And military training from being in a sniper platoon. Has led me to understand the great effect camo can have on your ability to stay hidden. Mych more of an asset than being greyman. Or perhaps just being greyman in the bush by simply blending in with or behind your surroundings. Study cover and concealment in the military. And youll know why troops wear camo and not just similar uniforms to tell each other apart. That went out several wars ago.
Ill take rural/woods camo over greyman anyday. Greyman is a fantasy brought on by movies. Where the good guy pulls his hammer just in time from his baggy pocket or backpack to slay the bad guy. If the bad guy has a rifle and sidearm readily available. Good luck.
Stepping off my soapbox.

Re: SHTF and you can only have one gun
I'd consider a Ruger Blackhawk convertible in .357/.38/9mm
Or an EAA Witness in 10mm (all steel and maybe conversion slides)
At least that's today's thoughts

Re: SHTF and you can only have one gun
Can't make up my mind between a 10/22 or a 12 gauge pump. Guess it depends on the exact circumstance. If I'm on foot and hunting to eat, I can carry a lot more .22LR than I can anything else, but if I'm in a vehicle I'll take my Mossberg 500 and cobble up a folding stock if needed, depending on how cramped the vehicle is.
Then again, a full sized 9mm pistol would make a good companion to a hunting bow.

Saw a demonstration of the Liberator. The shooter could not hit a silhouette at 10'.
Re: SHTF and you can only have one gun
Accurate, it was not...but that's not what it was designed for. I posted it, mostly because of its intended purpose...to acquire a better weapon - but that's not very CoC compliantZed Hunter wrote: ↑Fri Dec 28, 2018 10:11 amSaw a demonstration of the Liberator.
