Business Entrepreneur in the PAW

Post by TooManyIdeas » Thu May 03, 2012 2:50 pm

The PAW has come to pass and all that is left are the ruff rugged survivors. Humanity can only be seen at survivor camps, caravans, or the occasional lone settlement. Civilization is long gone, but not forgotten. While everyone else was caught with their pants down when the PAW happened, they can only think of their basic needs, and have no real skills outside of staying alive. We few of the Zombie Squad are the only ones prepped enough to afford the luxury of free time, and we have the knowhow to provide a good/service. If we expect to bring man back from the brink, business has to return back to the land. How do you make those bottle caps?

Let’s be a little creative here. The obvious gun/blade/bashy thing for hire is too easy. Also prostitution/slave trade and general human exploitation is out. What business venture do you think would be wanted and appreciated in these times?

theater, like in the movie A Boy and His Dog.
They had a movie projector and 1 movie but it was an outlet and people paid quite well to kick back for 90 minutes to watch it and think of more pleasant times.

Business venture? I don't want to draw any more attention in a PAW than I have to.

I was thinking it would be a good time to start that space tourism business I've been considering.

You know - less competition.

This. If things go all Fallout 3 on us, once things are back enough to have small groups cooperating for mutual benefit I think the three biggest businesses (other than keeping the bad guys away) will be growing food/collecting resources, fixing stuff when it breaks, and using those vegetables and firewood that people have gathered/grown to make tasty food. If I can avoid being the guy out collecting firewood and looking for mushrooms that won't kill me, I'm going to have a "town job". Since I'm better at cooking things than fixing things, I'll put out my shingle as a restaurant. You bring me two iguanas and some firewood and I'll give you a plate of iguana on a stick with some bread or greens.

I was thinking about a mobile bath/laundry unit. If there was a way to keep the general populous clean, that would go a long way toward fighting off disease and infection, and keep moral high for both the individual and anyone that was downwind. Besides after a few days, I know some people would kill for a hot bath.

but then again thats just 1 idea :P

Antiseptics.

Either Iodine (Extract from Seaweed, makes lovely purple crystals), or if I have a source for Coal (thus providing trade for coal merchants, miners and so forth) I can make Carbolic Acid.

And I could make lots for from Coal. Extract the Coal Tar and I have all sorts of dyes and explosives and I'll be a good mod and stop myself from talking now...

I would go town from town putting on one man plays quoting Shakespear. And maybe try to restart the Postal Service too

I can't think of any really novel new business concept for when the world gets set back 500 years.. I think alternative energy would be the biggest thing early on. A lot of our modern conveniences and even modern entertainment rely on electricity. People won't want to go back to the days of hauling ice from the north to cool the icebox. They want electricity to run their freezer.

Without the ability to go to the grocery store year-round to get canned vegetables and fruit, someone could start manufacturing more canning jars/lids/etc. They would really come back into demand. So would pectin, waxes, and other supplies.

I think railroads would come back into demand. If the rails are still good to foreign and far away lands, imports of exotic fruits and spices would be big money makers. Even the lowly salt would command some good money and might be worth a trip to Utah or evaporating seawater.

I have a feeling traveling storytellers would be a good business venture for those of us who like to tell stories and are good at it.

I don't know about that. With all the roleplayers I've seen on this and similar forums and all the roleplayers I know who talk about prepping, I think that might be a skill that's in abundance. Or at least there will be many bands of traveling players who can reenact every scene of every episode of Firefly or all of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
