I was watching a Jurassic Park marathon, and got to thinking about how idiotic most of the visitors were. But if you had to hump around Jurassic Park (or worse, Skull Island), no Hummer, no miniguns or flamethrowers or mounted .50 cals or claymores, just one pistol, rifle or shotgun, what would it be? Keep in mind, you've got huge T-Rex's, smaller but fast and agile Raptors, snakes, Pterodactyls, even swarms of those little "Compy" Jackal lizard things that will swarm you and eat you alive.

You're allowed various ammunitions, so I'm thinking a pump action 12 gauge with a varied assortments of sabot rounds for the big ones, buckshot for Raptors, birdshot for the Compys, maybe even some Dragon's Breath rounds for scaring off big, curious herbivors that might stampede you.

My first instinct was something like a Saiga with a bunch of different-load magazines, but I've never shot a Saiga and don't know how a semi-automatic handles slugs or "strange" ammunition?

This will probably get move to off topic or WWYD, but I'll play. I'd say something like a FAL or SCAR 17. Something definitely semi auto and a bigger round like 308.

I would be cool with an M-163. Just stay inside and don't worry about the small critters.

Hey borrowing one of these is just as probable as being asked to go to a real Jurassic Park.

If you stay in the jungle or buildings, you'll be safe from anything bigger than an alosaurus. You are much more maneuverable through tights woods than they are. I would bring a 12 gauge of some kind with the largest capacity I could get without the magazine becoming awkward. Anything the size of the raptors or dilophasaur from the movies would be dropped by a good shotgun (I would think; we can't exactly test this one) and the compies could be dealt with by a good pair of boots and a strong leg.

If we're mostly worrying about the big shit...

But really I think Bearcat's suggestion of a .308 MBR would be the most practical. Handy enough for close-in defense against raptors, big enough mag to take out compys, and a mag dump will at least give a big theropod something to think about. A selective-fire SCAR 17 with a ton of mags and an EOTech or something on top sounds about right.

But yeah, I agree on 308. I was gonna post a M21 pic, but figured screw it. I'm hunting a T-rex.

Barely man portable, but it qualifies - not mounted. The caliber and rate of fire make up for the effort spent lugging it around.

And that's when the attack comes, not from the front, but from the sides...from the other two raptors, you didn't even know were there...

(Translation: I see the limited traverse being a liability against the smaller dinosaurs.)
