Coffee mug, two empty JD bottles, Glock 19, leatherman, pocket knife, a pissed off 18 year female cat, a zippo and squirt bottle of fluid...and that is just on my desk where I'm sitting...four feet behind me is my Mossberg 88 loaded with 9 rounds of OO buck...If that doesn't work I'm breaking into my closet safe and pulling out one of my ARs....

A 1903 S&W .32 long revolver.

It had terminal efficiency on a burglar in the '30s.

As soon as I read the title of the question my left hand instinctively reached out to the nearest thing that I thought I could hit someone with; specifically the hand-grip exerciser that sits besides my keyboard. I recon if I grab one handle on that and hammer the other down on a zombie it's going to do some hurt. Whether the cheap plastic handle would shatter turning the mediocre club into a mediocre stabber or stay together, I don't know though, but either way it should do some damage.

Looking around a bit further I have some screw-drivers, pens, large wrenches, various knives, a bar stool, etc. But more importantly (and to also answer the actual original question), I work from home, and my rifle safe is 1..2..3..4-- four steps from my desk. Unfortunately it's kind of poorly supplied:

1x Scoped bolt-action .22lr with about 200-300 standard velocity rounds.
1x Double-barreled 12G with 1 (yes, one) #7-1/2 skeet shell.
1x Husqvarna M38 with 20 soft-point 6.5x55 hunting rounds.
2x .308 HPBT rounds (left overs from a box I purchased to use with a club rifle; I'm planning to eventually, probably, acquire a .308)
Enough reloading supplies to reload 50-100 rounds of .243, .308, or 6.5x55 (my brother has a .243 and a .308 and stores his reloading supplies at my place)

Being that I just replaced my standard 9mm rounds with the box of Hornady Custom rounds, I have my 9mm handy. :)

My ginger wife, my whippet, a G23, a Sig 938, and an assortment of pointy things. Between the wife and the dog I probably won't even need to wake up, she has a sig too.

On hand as of right now? To my left I've got a 12 gauge mossberg with a couple rounds of buckshot, loaded in the shotgun. About 3 feet behind me I've got my trusty marlin .22lr with 3-9x32 scope, about 200 rounds of .22 for that. And to my right, I just got done taking apart a 5.7L Chevy small block and decided I wanted a prize from it. I have the camshaft, with cam gear attached. Weighs around 10 pounds and that cam gear really packs a punch!

Muahahahaha! Haven't checked this thread in a while. There is pretty much a melee weapon on every wall of my house. The hallway is almost all swords. There's a spear over the dining room window. A Cold Steel Viking war axe over the door. New sword coming, not sure where I'm gonna put it. Bedroom has katana, Scottish basket hilt, and the guns.

I wasn't in the Boy Scouts.
A hammer it would not help against a zombie indeed likely remain stuck on the first try.
Matches and lighters aren't particularly useful in immediate danger, while having the time for a trap could be possible burn something.
A flashlight is useful at least until the battery last but remain a passive defensive instruments for avoid danger. So the help is indirect.

I am at home at my desk ,as I have a Desktop Pc ,not a laptop. The desk has no drawers ,only side shelves.
I have:
1.Many (sharp) pencils and pens. 2.A couple screwdrivers for PC maintenance. 3.Metal flashlight with bezel. 4.Hammer. 5.Another hammer. 6.Crappy mini-multitool. 7.A Boker Gnome knife. 8.A couple of empty beer bottles from last night. 9.Yet another hammer which my friend forgot a couple of days ago.
I feel safe.
