Where would you ideally go?

Post by KillerForHire » Sat Jan 07, 2017 3:44 am

Sorry if there's already one these...or more.

but yeah where do you think would be a good place to go once the dust settles?

I'm thinking Carter Lake in Omaha, Nebraska looks good.

Almost smack dab in the center of The US & I imagine it would be defensible with The Missouri River to the north, east & south & Carter Lake to the west, north & east, it's like two natural moats.

For me it would depend on what you mean by "when the dust settles". If things are back to normal I'm not sure I'd see any need to relocate at all. In the aftermath of a major disaster, moving any distance to live more or less permanently carries it own set of risks. Risks that often outweigh those associated with sheltering in.

If, on the other hand, the new normalcy is a world knocked back to the subsistence age, maybe a rural area somewhere with a more hospitable climate for agriculture or animal husbandry.

But since you're talking about the basic defensibility of your location in broad geographic terms, sounds like you're envisioning a scenario where the dust is far from settled. Are you talking about a hypothetical world infested with zombies (or marauding humans)? If so, your location is nestled between a large airport and a densely populated residential area. I would definitely NOT relocate to a place like that.

Low population density
Long growing seasons
Lots of water
Lots of friends

Thats my recipe for happiness. For me that means the PNW.

A tiny town (really a village) in southern IL where a good part of my family lives. It's surrounded by farmland, soil is decent in town for small gardens, people are mostly friendly but will leave you alone, very low population density, nearby lumber and hunting land; only problem is there isn't a river within walking distances (there are wells though), and tornadoes scare me to my core.
But again, it depends on the situation. And I'm also over 1000 miles away, so the question is how to get there...

Home , I'd go home. Unless you have family or friends in that ideal location or is geographically remote from other people, you will be looked on as a outsider.

So many people don't think about this. Especially since a lot of those places they would want to go are rural, lots of rural places don't like outsiders. I only get a pass in the area I mentioned because my father is a well liked guy.

If you are a battalion or even a division sized element looking to hold ground against similar sized elements, I'd say yeah. Carter Lake for the battalion sized elements. That bend in the Missouri if you are a division sized element.

If you are a person I really don't think you need to be looking at terrain with that broad a scope. As others have pointed out, Omaha is a pretty big area. About 450k people. And they are on the wrong side of the Missouri. You could consider yourself partially defended from Council Bluffs, but only if you destroy the bridges.

Also, water does not stop people from coming. It slows down large units, and makes them more vulnerable while crossing. A small band simply goes to a different spot to cross. But the Omaha/Council Bluffs area is not the place to worry about small units. If you are looking at a PAW you need to be worried about gangs, particularly with racial affiliations. I would not count on having a battalion or division backing you up there, though you could maybe join an appropriate racial gang.

On the other hand, take a long hard look at the Loess Hills region to the North. I believe the Nebraska side of the Missouri is a reservation, but the Iowa side is state land, and pretty amazing. Go hiking there and see what you think.

The Nebraska City/Indian Caves region would be pretty neat.

You have all of Missouri to consider. Lots of Iowa to look at. South of Omaha on down to Kansas things are pretty cool.

Anywhere along the Missouri (but not urban) I would be happy.

If you really want my opinion on the best places to go, I"d say the Appalachian mountains or the Rocky mountains, including up into Canada, are the best places. Defendable. Lower population density (other than Colorado). Able to sustain a limited population. Likely to thin out the unprepared. Difficult for governors to control (can be a minus if bandits are rampant, but a bonus if The Governor is trying to take your prison).

I"d also give a lot of consideration to the American Redoubt, where you will see a higher percentage of people who are prepared. Now, the "prepared" can be a tricky lot. Some get pretty prickly about sharing their stuff and having other people near them. But others of the "prepared" community are extremely welcoming and supportive. Very community oriented. Based on articles about the American Redoubt, it sounds like a lot of very conservative successful professionals are attracted to the area. That means a lot of resources to help an area flourish in a PAW. There will be a lot of leadership and experience in that area.

Just my opinions.

My mom's house. It's in a semi-rural area although I wouldn't call it the boonies. She's an organic gardener and already has a greenhouse set up. Also she is switching her house to solar power and she has a woodburning stove. We also have an open invitation to her house at any time and especially during a disaster situation.

I live in South Florida in a high density city not too terribly far from Miami in a rented apartment next to a college. So if evacuation is necessary that is where I would go.

I'm trying to get her to join this group because she's been a semi-prepper ever since I could remember. Is there a group formed in the Midlands of South Carolina? I think she would have more interest if it was something that just wasn't online.

I plan to stay put for the most part. If I do have to go somewhere else, I can load supplies in my car and go to my aunt and uncle's house on a lake not far from here.

I live in the village I grew up in. (Although it's now about half city trash that commute from their McMansions to Dallas.)

I'd drop a few abatis over convenient roads for outsiders, help fight off forces we can fight and rebuild from forces we couldn't.

I'd advise the old folks as I can abide by what I'm sure will be good decisions. We've got a well rounded bunch of modern folks who still can do the old skills.

Do you plan to eat the goats afterwards? Cause that would be a little awkward.

BTW, we need Doc Fabulous to chime in...he speaks for the goats after all.

Good question.

My basic premise in life is "life is always worth living." You never know when things will start to get better. It might suck, but if you stick around long enough, it will get better.

Plus we can define for ourselves what "suck" means. And to some extent we can define our current situation as "not all that sucky." Cognitive framing is pretty important.

With any change comes opportunity. My ancestors probably had the first trading post on the Monongehela in early PA (John McKee) and made a living in Mexican Texas. The redistribution of wealth is a tenet of free enterprise and capitalism.

Not many places in the UK. 65 million people, at least half of them trying to surge out of the cities.
Three days of food max due to just in time ordering.
London would collapse within 24 hours due to the lack of social cohesion.

Scotland OK but cold in Winter

I know a place in Devon...but I aint telling :)
