millions of deer were shot before scopes existed, and you can still find $150 rifles (used) if you look in the right places. But, if you buy grain and legumes, in season directly from the farmer, $150 will feed one person for 4-5 months. $1000 is a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a deer rifle. It would take harvesting at least 30 deer to pay for it, if you pay to have the meat set up for the freezer, and at least 15 deer if you do all the meat processing yourself. You can easily snare deer, if you know how.

if you're worried about shtf, you'd better get the hell out of the UK.

Frankly, I've got to agree with zantra on that point. The population density of The UK (and all of Europe, really) is HORRIBLE!

I'd suggest Canadian interior or Western Australia. Gun laws aren't much better, but immigration would be easy for you since they are Commonwealth Realms.

I don't like being wrong. Thanks for telling me that- next time I won't look like an idiot. [maybe]

I thought immigration was fairly open within the CW. Is immigration at least easier/expedited?

It's a bit of a meaningless union so there are no special immigration agreements across it.

Neither country has any special provisions. My cousin who has lived and worked in Australia 15+ years, married to an Australian, has 3 Australian children is still being dicked around by the authorities for example. The only 'favor' I know of is that New Zealand gives Brits 90 day tourist visa no questions asked whereas other countries get 60.

Nope, often harder as you are expected to be able to follow every aspect of the red tape maze. I spent two years just trying to get a working holiday visa, which isn't even tangential to permanent migration.

No Guns allowed, no problem for this innovator.

I'm not so sure of the tourniquet made of elastic bands. IME they degrade over time. There must be a better solution.

The rubber will degrade over time. You can extend the life of the rubber by putting in a light-proof bag in the bag of the refrigerator, or you can just replace the band stock on a regular basis.

A couple thoughts on slingshots:
1) Slingshots with a decent band set (5-10 ft-lbs of energy) have a long history of small game hunting and varmint control.
2) If local laws allow, starships (wrist braced and extended fork slingshots), and slingshot rifles (look up Bill Hays' Predator Slingrifle) offer impressive power and accuracy.
3) Technically in a legal limbo, pellet bows and stone bows (ball bearing launching bows and crossbows respectively) also have the same history of small game hunting.
4) They're as quiet as bows, and will launch anything you can fit into the pouch. The usual steel ball bearings, lead balls, nut/washer/bolt assembled, darts, arrows, and of course, rocks.

A bow is a superior weapon, and we discussed it earlier in the thread with the overall consensus being a modern bow/crossbow made a good alternative to a gun. The main advantage of a slingbow/slingshot is it's smaller, lighter, and a lot cheaper then a bow. It makes for a better backup or emergency weapon.

I have experimented firing various things from paintball markers, any projectile heavy enough to do any damage is too heavy to fire, the best results I had were from a whittled stake which had no accuracy and a range of about 5 metres, or a tampon (dont ask) which had great range and accuracy but no stopping power (in the sense of what your after ;-) ).

See my photo for my entry into the use a 'sling shot' to launch an arrow game.
super cheap, light and easy. The arrow are the only hard part.

On a broader note, mankind had been making its own weapons for ages. If you cannot own "X" be that a plasma rifle in the 40 watt range, a center fire pistol or carbine, or anything else you have simple basic path.
Look to the next lowest tech and see if you can legally access that weapon.
No fixed ammo firearms? What about cap and ball? flintlock? matchlock? crossbow, bow, atl-atl, sling, all the down to sharp stick or handy rock.

No firearms means nothing with a barrel launching a potentially lethal projectile except airguns or CO2 guns which are under 12ftlb. In Scotland, they licence all airguns to. No hunting allowed with anything which launches an arrow. Weapons shooting stones and bullets can be used for hunting.

As someone who owns guns, I wouldn't suggest picking up a gun with limited knowledge or any experience with shooting or handling a firearm safely. I don't know if you have any experience shooting but it is a deadly weapon that could very easily take a life because of a bad habit like a finger on the trigger. I wouldn't suggest trying to get a gun from local farms etc. If guns are that hard to acquire there those guns will be worth even more and going with the farmers. Or more likely that the farmers will be holding on to there land and firearms. I would say look into and save for the permit to get a rifle or shotgun. Then you don't have to worry about that. I would seriously consider, bows, crossbows etc.. It will actually be a huge benefit from a noise prospective. A rifle shot echo can be heard from a long distance and will alert other to A..a gun with ammo. B. Someone with supplies and prepared. With more traditional weapons you have stealth. You can take medium size game with next to ZERO noise. Someone 50m away won't hear a shot from a bow. From 200m you will hear a rifle shot. Just something to.think about. Another option is to offer the farmers work in exchange for security and food. It will give you access to weapons and also a safer place with food. Just some thoughts.

AFAIK Slingshots and slings are also not legal to hunt with.

As a precautionary tale, and you did mention Russia invading in your first paragraph, there were some shenanigans by the Iraqis during Gulf War 2 you should be aware of. When they (The Iraqi armed forces) retreated, they would sometime leave booby-trapped weapons behind. One that comes to mind was a sniper rifle with a ~1/8" hole drilled through the bottom of the barrel, under the forearm. When it was fired, it would blow up under the shooters support hand. Getting your hand shredded in a survival situation is not going to help you.

That leaves <12 ft-lb airguns. Back of the envelope calculations mean a .177 cal airgun with a <1,000 ft/s rating with PBA pellets (~5.5 grains) should be OK.

Easiest alternative to a gun would be a crossbow, and the ammo is reusable.

Two quick questions on the whole premise, (1) Why would anyone nuke Scotland? (2) Why would anyone invade Scotland?
I mean, Clyde has the naval base, but what else is there really work a nuke?
If England got schwacked by nukes, most of the fallout would end up in the Channel due to the prevailing winds from the south west.

It is kind of like folks here in Alaska worrying about getting nuked by North Korea. Not a lot of targets, even less actually worth a nuke.
