Spam has gone CRAZY here! 7/23/12

Post by Ryder358 » Mon Jul 23, 2012 12:02 am

What is going on with all these spammer profiles in the last few days starting a ton of threads of mostly nonsense? A little is expected but its been nuts lately. What can we do about it? I keep reporting it but that's only so much help/

When reporting spam is it better to report each spammy thread started by a user, or just one per user?

Don't know, I report each thread as tiresome as that is.

All of them, but it isn't a big deal if you don't. Someone else is probably going to report anything that you don't, so it's up to you.

Just my opinion.

I've seen some boards put a simple question in the registration process that spambots can't answer, and then they can't join. Helps a lot. I can't remember if there was one for this forum when I joined.

I report everything I find, regardless of it being 4 posts by the same spammer.

Whiske changed how the captcha works yesterday afternoon. So far, all the spammers today had signed up before then. We will see how it goes.

I banned 13 yesterday, so I understand how bad it is suddenly.

Plus - why the fuck would someone think a zombie forum would be a good place to sell rip off designer purses and shoes?

Those kitchen people are all over the Ratlook.com forums as well. Ugh. And the handbaggers hit other car forums I visit. It's odd. Well, spam isn't the most intelligent form of advertising, so I guess one wouldn't expect them to be very intelligent about where they do it either.

I don't think they have a clue what the form is about. They are just looking at volume. I brought this up a couple of weeks ago and am glad to see something being done.

We did a study about three years ago about the viability of the internet as a communication medium in ten years. There was a lot of discussion that it might not be worth while on an open net due to all the viruses and spam. The spammers are growing exponentially.

since sending the spam costs almost nothing, if they make one sale per million posts they will come out ahead.

What! Are you trying to tell me that Zombies don't want to be fashionable? And with the limited work outlook for them, they will need to buy the knock-offs...

On one of my Kayak boards, we do get the purses, and others, but we also tend to get more "targeted" spam. Kayak related / fishing related, etc... actually a little refreshing before we delete it. Also makes it more difficult to differentiate spam/new user... :ohdear:

You have higher quality discussions on closed forums, to be sure.

Some forums dissuade spammers by making it so users cannot post links or images until they have reached a certain number of posts. I don't know if ZS has considered or tried this at any point, but considering the volume of spam that is still running you mods ragged, perhaps it is worth a try?

That, or a captcha, or making an intro thread a requirement...

+1 on intro thread req. That'd be nice. I think I started that way...

Lately each new spam I come across, I report. It's starting to feel like this: Image

If you want to chat do it elsewhere.

Of course we're looking at fixing this - posting about it continually doesn't accomplish anything.
