I understand why there is a cap on the size of images. However, it seems to be stuck on what was reasonable many years ago and could use an update. Many image hosting sites automatically downsize the size of images, but often their small sizes are still larger than what ZS allows.

Thanks for the recommendations! I've used Photobucket and Imgur, but they've both been a bit of a PITA with the size limitations. I'll have to give those a shot.

It would still be nice to get the image size cap bumped up by 50% or so, maybe more. These are no longer the days of 19" monitors with 1280x1024 max resolution.

No, but these are still the days of mobile users with slow connections and data caps.

That's a good point. I didn't think of that.

Ah, but that would be assuming that the owners of ZS are still actively engaged in managing the forum.

Some image size examples:

Full res uncropped Pix 3648 x 2048 2.3 MB
Cropped and reduced to 1270 x 730 324 KB
ZS sized is 848 x 590 at 136 KB

So we could be allowed quite a bit larger images without impacting anyone's data plan

And......Data plans are really cheap these days

https://20somethingfinance.com/cheapest ... artphones/

Examples:

T-Mobile
$30 a month, unlimited mobile web and text and 100 minutes of talk time for quiet people

For gabby people
$40/month for up to 3GB of 4G LTE
$50/month for up to 5GB of 4G LTE
$60/month for up to 10GB of 4G LTE

Straight Talk
No Contract: $45/month, unlimited talk, text, and data, with 5GB at high speeds. 3G/4G availability varies by phone and location.

Yes, I have unlimited data. No, I can't actually use it as unlimited because we live outside of town and don't have a strong signal, but I still generally get better results using my phone as a hot spot rather than piggy-backing on the satellite from the next building (I do have permission). I end up skipping things that take too long to load.

The last time we went into the cell phone store to get a new contract the lady couldn't believe that the data usage was so low for our whole family. It was lower than she had seen for even one person.

Things have probably changed since then as I moved to a place where I'm not in range of Wi-Fi wuite as much and I'm the only one who really uses the phone to do things other than call people. We still haven't run over though.

Don't forget, what is uploaded to the forum's servers, counts to their monthly bandwidth.

If you upload a 1mb image to show in a thread, and 1000 people view that thread/image, that is 1000mb of bandwidth used. Whilst in the days of mega-GB usage that sounds like a pittance, remember that that is just one image, and that's on a forum which by all accounts sounds like the management has left the building.

Server upgrades and more money spending doesn't sound like it's on the cards.

External image hosting sites are free and easy, and they keep the strain on forums to a minimum.

These pixel size limits apply to hotlinked images too so I would enjoy learning how that strains the servers.

Unless I missed it somewhere, this site doesn't allow image uploads, and hotlinked images do not contribute to site bandwidth usage.

Not so much the servers but the downloads of people using the board. If someone were for example to post a million pics trolling a troll that would really bog down a slow connection. Not that, that would ever happen.

I have OK internet service. It is simply the best I can get where I reside where I am right at the end of the extension cord of the internet. People beyond that (and quite a few people on this board are beyond that for obvious reasons) have really slow connections (think 2G). That is one of the reasons why we still have an old style message board.

Nope. Please no. Not that!

That is why avatars are limited in size. We can only have fuzzy photos of fake heroes wielding fake machine guns.

LOL. If it was the no-no-no troll it would have been hinted as being something else! I held a 50 cal once. That was enough.

You need the muscles of a young Jesse Ventura to have any hope of picking one up assembled. If you did so, loads of respect.

Avatars, by their nature, have to have certain dimension limitations, and the scripts this place runs on have built-in maximum limits on them (but operators of the forum can impose lower limits if they want), so I wasn't thinking of them in this context. I believe the discussion is about image size limitations in forum posts, not elsewhere.

Regardless, it is getting time to choose a new avatar and you've given me something to consider... B&W or color?

Then I must have been Jesse Ventura-like in my younger days (and I assure you I was not) because I lifted, serviced, mounted, and fired many an M2HB in my younger days as a Navy gunner's mate.

A Navy gun without the tripod and empty it is only 83 pounds.

An Army gun with the Tripod and loaded is nearly 150 lbs.

The tripod is not considered part of the gun, and only in the movies do they carry them with a belt hanging, blasting anything that moves.

Thanks for the praise but maybe the one I struggled to lift weighed a lot less than other versions? The weapon was from a long lost P-40 Warhawk crash site in the Sierras and the only one of six we could find. The barrel was bent!
